The Impact of a Major Event on the New Zealand Tourism Industry. The Filming of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy in New Zealand New Zealand was put on the world map because of the films. Tourists came from all around the world to see the scenery which had shaped the movies so much. Specific locations stated to received more visitors due to the movies; for example, tourists coming to climb Mt Doom (or Mt Ngauruhoe). The technology in transport grew, as people wanted to get to remote locations quickly. This meant that helicopter tours became very popular. Development of government strategies which helped the New Zealand film industry to grow, as well as encourage spin offs from the LoTR to come to New Zealand.

9/11 Terrorist Attacks (September 11 th 2001) Because of the terrorists attacks on the Twin Towers in New York City, and on the Pentagon in Washington DC, heavy restrictions and security measures were put on to tourists who were travelling by plane. Many tourists, especially Americans were afraid to fly or travel at all. This meant that worldwide there was a cease in international travel. Since then New Zealand has been seen to be a, ‘safe destination’, and with the implementation of stricter security measures numbers are up again. Travel is now not as easy as what it was before 9/11. security especially has increased which has added to travel time. Some people from specific destinations might be regarded as suspicious and are made to undergo extra security. There are now limitations to what you carry on-board with you on an aircraft, (for example no liquids, aerosols or gels over 100ml). Knives, scissors or sharp objects are also not allowed. As well as this, you have to be x-rayed, along with your luggage.
