2 What is Al-Qaeda? a multi-national group formed by Osama bin Laden in the late 1980s to unite Arabs that had been fighting against the Soviet Union helped finance, recruit, transport, and train Sunni Islamic extremists for the Afghan resistance issued a statement in February 1998 stating it was the responsibility of all Muslims to kill all U.S. citizens and their allies

4 Al-Qaeda Events December 29, 1992: a bomb on a hotel where American soldiers were staying on a humanitarian mission in Somalia April to June, 1993: several bombs are located throughout New York City, targeting tourist areas and federal buildings December 10, 1994: a bomb is set off on a Philippines plane killing one Japanese businessman January 21-22, 1995: the Day of Hate was planned by Ramzi Yousef--11 jets would be destroyed by timing devices while flying over the Pacific Ocean; a fire delayed this

5 August 8, 1998: suicide bombers hit American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania October 12, 2000: the USS Cole sustains damage when a nearby boat explodes

6 September 11, 2001 CAPPS was the pre-9/11 screening process; luggage would be held for those suspected of being terrorists until they boarded the plane; 9 of the 19 terrorists were flagged by this system Around 8:14, Flight 11 is hijacked; around 8:45, Flight 175 is hijacked; both were travelling from Boston to Los Angeles; both planes would crash into the World Trade Center in New York City Around 8:52, Flight 77 is taken over; this plane was travelling from Washington, DC to Los Angeles; this plane would crash into the Pentagon Around 9:23, Flight 93 is hijacked; this planed was travelling from Newark to San Francisco; this plane crashes in Pennsylvania
