The Islands Scotland has some 790 islands, most of which are located off the northern and western coast of the country. Loch Ness Loch Ness is a large, freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands extending for approximately 37 km in the southwest of Inverness. Loch Ness is best known loch for the Loch Ness Monster, also known affectionately as "Nessie". Loch Ness is the second largest Scottish loch after Loch Lomond. It contains more fresh water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined.
