Beginnings Extension of career development curriculum Hands on real life experiences Build relationships with businesses and leaders in the local community Program Logistics Business partners meet four times a year with class Teachers and business partners plan activities together

Foundation of Program Provides examples of expected behavior in the work setting Connected to School District Goals and Mission Statement Each grade level is connected to a career pathway Individual classrooms are paired with a business or profession related to each pathway

Getting Started! In the summer: Choose businesses to pair with each classroom Contact businesses and ask if they would be willing to participate!  It costs no money  Builds relationships with future customers/employees  Makes families more familiar with business  It’s FUN!!

Meeting Objectives First Meeting: Character Building and PBIS Expectations Students and business partner will meet. The business will become familiar with our school district and the class they are partnered up with. Students and business partner will educate each other on the importance of character in our school environment and in the work place. Students will teach the PBIS Behavior Expectations to the business partner and will work to get this out in the community through the business partner.

Activity Examples First Meeting Activities: Display PBIS Poster in business place with traced class hands beside the poster Teach PBIS expectations for classroom Do the Six Pillar Shuffle together or other activity Have Business Partners take PBIS pledge Talk/discussion on qualities of a good employee/owner/manager Include Business Partner in activities sponsored by the PBIS Committee

Meeting Objectives Second Meeting: Career Based The students will learn about the partner’s business and career pathway Students will get a hands on experience of what it is like to work in the business partner’s business

Activity Examples Second Meeting Activities: Visit the business partner’s place of work Share pictures/brochures of work environment Watch video about business/career Activity that discusses skills needed to be successful in the business Have student go to business and have employees take PBIS pledge Review how PBIS expectations are applied at the workplace

Meeting Objectives Third Meeting: Academics Student and business partner will connect academic skills of reading, math, and science to world of work Students will apply skills learned in the classroom to the world of work

Activity Examples Activities: Tutoring or reading with the students Demonstrate how math is used at job Teaching a related lesson/unit together Teach math skills specific to that career Mock spelling bee with career words Reading world of work material Science experiments related to world of work

Meeting Objectives Fourth Meeting: Strengthening Relationships Students and business partner will build and strengthen their relationship. The business partner and the classroom will do an activity together that culminates the year

Activity Examples Activities: Encouraging words, notes, cards Invite to school events, musicals Picture-sharing Send newsletters to business partner Do a class project together Share hobbies Group energizers Join in a service project together with business partner Participate in Earth Day clean up together Attend End of School Awards together National Read Across America Day

Next Step Organize a kick off! Invite all the business partners and teachers Introduce the program, other features of your school you would like to highlight Provide planning time for teachers and partners Provide networking time Always great to bring food!

Planning Time! Activity Schedule 4 Meetings a Year – Recommend meeting 1 x month Plan times with your teacher that work for you Brainstorm some ideas for activities you could do with the classroom Keep it simple – what you do is up to you! Be sure to exchange contact information

Assessment Identify a way that teamwork is used at your business partner’s business. What is something you like about the place your business partner works? Why is it important to have good character at your business partner’s business? Do you think you would like this job? Why or why not? Do you think you would be good at this job? Why or why not? Which career pathway does your business partner work in?
