Weaver Popcorn Company Jeff Frost /Tamara Fausnacht Logistics Group Why Start With a Career in Logistics?

Weaver Popcorn History  World’s largest popcorn company.  Privately held, in operation for 76 years now, 4 th generation Weaver involved with company is currently COO.  Two production plants, Van Buren, IN and Rojas, Argentina.  Currently ship to over 90 countries world-wide.  Largest customers include Wal-Mart, General Mills, concession costumers (movie theater sales), and many grocery store chains across the nation.

What Is Logistics? -The management of the details of an operation. -Handling an operation that involves providing labor and materials be supplied as needed. (Is this what you expected the definition of logistics to be?).

So What Is Logistics Really?  Logistics would be anything involving the supply flow (both inbound and outbound), any warehousing, any transportation contracts, any 3 rd party warehousing, any EDI interchange, any direct communication with production, any ideas with marketing, any phone calls with sales……

Why Could Logistics Be a Great Place to Start a Career?  Logistics will give you a great feel for not only supply chain functions, but overall company functions in general. –Liaison between marketing/sales and production. –Liaison between sales and end customer. –Direct contact with outside vendors of all sorts. (Transportation/3 rd party logistics, etc).

Why Could Logistics Be a Great Place to Start a Career (Cont.)  Logistics is often an overlooked option when students exit college.  The need for logistics professionals that are knowledgeable in their field is a huge demand for companies.  Good logistics professionals can offer a company huge cost savings, providing greater profit margin.  (Weaver Popcorn shaved off over 1 million dollars in freight expenses for the Trail’s End division in 2001 from 2000.)

Weaver ODC Leader Position Great opportunity to learn all aspects of logistics including transportation, warehousing, information systems, production scheduling, and plant operations. Would be responsible for “corporate office management” of two 3 rd party logistic facilities.

Qualifications Desired  Business Major. Any sector of Kelley’s business program could be suitable for success. As discussed earlier, we don’t necessarily expect a vast knowledge of logistics.  Recent internship in any business related field has proven to “quicken” the learning curve for this position.  Good speaking skills, willingness to learn new functions, and the ability to react to situations on the “fly” are expected. (Good logistics managers don’t let stress manage them, they manage stress!)  Desire to move up the company ladder quickly. This position is designed to have an individual in the ODC leader position no longer than 1.5 to 2 years. The individual would then elevate their role in the logistics department or migrate to another department with increased responsibility, new functions.

The Program  The Trail’s End Popcorn sale is a seasonal fund raiser for the Boy Scout’s of America. Over 70% of the proceeds from the sale are given back to the scouts.  We distribute to scouts all over the U.S. And Canada, over 1500 truckloads!  Trail’s End is the largest single business sector for Weaver Popcorn, and we basically ship to the scouts over a 2 month period!

Typical Job functions for an ODC Leader  Daily Freight Management and cost analysis associated with this function from our plant in Van Buren, IN to your two Outside Distribution Centers. Freight would then be Managed under the same above processes from the Distribution Center to the customer.  Constant interaction with your ODC’s. This includes all warehousing, inventory issues, quality checks, cycle counts that need to be performed on site. We must make sure that the facilities are performing to our specifications.  All training for your ODC’s. You will be responsible for on-site trainings involving this 3 rd party provider.  Constant interaction with Trail’s End Sales Mangers. You are liaison between the sales staff and the Boy Scouts of America.
