Lesson 1 “A Land of Canyons”

The Colorado River did what? Wore away rock and helped carve out the Grand Canyon The Colorado River carried sand, gravel, and boulders that helped cut out the canyon. Rainwater continues to dissolve certain kinds of rock causing it to wear away. River water is causing erosion. Also, sand is picked up by the wind and blown against the canyon’s walls, wearing away the surface of the rock.

Why is the formation of the Grand Canyon always changing? Erosion takes place all the time.

Early minors in the Grand Canyon decided to stop mining because they could make more money from tourism. How could they earn money from tourism? Charge admission to see the canyon Charge people to take people to the bottom of the canyon Sell souvenirs Lead sightseeing tours
