1 What things change the Earth’s surface slowly?
Slow Processes

2 Slow Changes to the Earth’s Surface
Process is a synonym for change. Slow Process- A change that occurs slowly and steadily over time.

3 What is Weathering???? the breaking apart, wearing away, or dissolving of rock into small particles Sediments- the smaller rock particles

4 Physical Weathering Physical Weathering- The wearing away of rock by wind and moving water. For example, the Grand Canyon was formed by wind and water erosion.

5 Chemical Weathering Chemical Weathering- Weathering that results in changes of minerals that make up rocks. Acid rain is an example.

6 Biological Weathering
Biological Weathering- The wearing down of rock by living things. For example, plant roots break up rocks as they grow.

7 What is Erosion? Erosion- The carrying away of soil and rock particles by waves, wind, running water, or glaciers. After rocks are weathered down into sediment and soil, it is carried away by erosion.

8 Deposition- when sediments are deposited or dropped in a new place
Five types of weathering and erosion that slowly change the Earth’s surface: Glaciers/ ice Wind Running Water/Waves Landslides Living Things Deposition- when sediments are deposited or dropped in a new place

9 The Grand Canyon was created by erosion. Wind and running water help to shape the canyon.

10 Other Erosion Examples
What type of erosion created this rock formation? Moving sand acts like sandpaper, rubbing the rocks smooth. What type of erosion formed this water arch?

11 Glaciers Glaciers- a large mass of ice and snow that form when more snow falls in winter than melts in the summer. It moves when gravity pulls it downhill. Glaciers change the earth by dragging rock debris and carving the land.

12 How do you think these glaciers
change the Earth’s surface as they move downhill?

13 Living Things Change the Land
Organisms, or living things can change the shape of the land. Animals burrow in the ground Plant roots This meerkat makes huge underground burrows.

14 Landslides Change Earth’s Surface
Gravity is the force the pulls objects toward Earth’s center. A landslide is a rapid movement of rock, soil, and other materials down a hill or mountain. LOOK OUT!!!!!!

15 Closing Questions How does wind change the Earth’s surface?
How does running water and waves change the Earth’s surface? How do glaciers change the Earth’s surface? What are the three types of weathering and how are they different?
