Born in England in Harriet wrote 1 book and many essays on the topics of sociology and (controversially) sexual identity, marriage, religion, and domestic life. Trip to Middle EastTrip to US When visiting the US of A, Harriet met with James Madison and a bunch of abolitionists in Boston. Her support of abolitionism caused controversy. She returned to England and wrote Society in America (1837) and How to Observe Morals and Manners (1838). These books are considered the founding books of modern sociology. After visiting the Middle East in 1834, Martineau developed a strong disbelief in organized religion and became a life-long Atheist. Martineau supported Darwin's theory because it was not based on theology. She expounded upon the doctrine of philosophical atheism. Spheres of Influence

HomeHealth, Finance Harriet started going deaf and losing her sense of taste and smell, and in 1821 started writing anonymous political and economic criticisms for the Monthly Repository. When her father’s business fell she began selling her articles to make ends meet. Her success established her reputation as a great writer and respectable woman. She had heart disease so she wrote an autobiography thinking she was about to die. She lived another 20 years after writing it. Harriet was the second youngest child of 8, and her parents were hardly home – leaving her very neglected throughout childhood. Her mother was not nurturing nor was she warm, both qualities that Harriet believed were necessary for girls growing up. Her mom also wanted her daughters to be educated, but at the same time hated feminism and forced them to learn sewing and to never been seen in public holding a pen in their hand. more Spheres of Influence
