Presentation transcript:

Curley’s wife tart/jailbait or naïve/victim? Do you agree with this statement? Talk to the person you are sitting next to and come to an agreement.

Curley’s Wife Curley’s wife is quite an evocative character in the book and people react very strongly to her. We are now going to search for quotes which tell us about her character and what people think of her

Quote Bank In pairs label yourselves A and B. Person A is going to find the quote, while person B will write down the quote found. Macaulay’s row look at pages 32-33 and 91 and find a quote where Steinbeck tells us about Curley’s wife’s appearance. Jordan’s row look at pages 87-89 and find a quote which lets us know what Curley’s wife thinks and feels. Caitlin’s row look at pages 51-52 and 33-34 and find a quote where another character describes Curley’s wife. Lawrence’s row look at pages 78-80 and find a quote which shows Curley’s wife exercising power.

Quote Bank Once you have selected an appropriate quote write it down onto your coloured piece of paper and hang it from the clothesline at the back of the room, behind your row.

Shopping Time Take your booklet to the back of the room and select one of the quotes from each section a write it in the space provided.

Planning your argument… On page 5 of your booklet fill in all the reasons why Curley’s wife deserves sympathy and all the reasons why she does not.

Reflect Think back to the start of the lesson when we were discussing what we thought Curley’s wife was. Has your opinion changed? Pick two words from the four we were looking at and explain why these words fit best to Curley’s wife.

Write a lot about a little Pick one of the quotes from your bank which you think will give you the most scope for answering the question ‘Curley’s wife deserves the most sympathy of any of the characters in Of Mice and Men’ How far do you agree with this statement? Now use it to help you write a paragraph for you essay.

Steinbeck’s letter ‘I know her’ Read over a letter Steinbeck wrote where he explains a little about the background of Curley’s wife. Does this letter affect how sympathetic you feel towards her? Using all the information you have learned today try to write an introduction to the essay, using quotes from the book and Steinbeck’s letter.
