Minia Univresity Council for Education Affairs Meeting - July Higher Education Enhancement Project Fund (HEEPF) Improving Transportation Engineering Education through Field Problems: Proof of Concept for Course Material Prototype Project Manager Hussein Abou-Elsoaad Abd-Elmotaal Professor & Department Head Civil Engineering Department Faculty of Engineering Minia University

Minia Univresity Council for Education Affairs Meeting - July Project Overview - Motivation Quality Assurance of Higher Education (Accreditation) focus on the “ product ” Our target Product in Civil Engineering are engineers: knowledgeable about new tools and techniques, skilled in the implementation of advanced data collection and analysis methods broadly educated, technically well-trained have the critical thinking and problem solving skills required for today ’ s work environment.

Minia Univresity Council for Education Affairs Meeting - July Project Overview Integration of Field Problems with the Program Learning Objectives

Minia Univresity Council for Education Affairs Meeting - July Integrating Field problems with program and class learning Objectives

Minia Univresity Council for Education Affairs Meeting - July Project Overview - Motivation Effective engineering education should focus on student mastery of content through high-level thinking skills (such as application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation) resulting in greater acquisition of content and development of thinking skills.

Minia Univresity Council for Education Affairs Meeting - July Project Overview – The Tool Create, test, and evaluate a set of field problems that are: 1) based on real world situations, 2) based on data collected and analyzed using state-of-the-art technologies, 3) developed using sound educational and product development practices, 4) targeted to and tested by different levels of undergraduate civil engineering students, 5) focused on major disciplines within civil engineering namely transportation engineering and transportation infrastructure as well as advanced surveying and geodesy, and 6) the prototype for a full scale educational materials development project for general civil engineering education.

Minia Univresity Council for Education Affairs Meeting - July Project Overview - Output Educate a new generation of engineering professionals who upon graduation will have: strong sense of field engineering design and practices, knowledge of the state-of-the-art technologies in data collection and analysis, and strong problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Minia Univresity Council for Education Affairs Meeting - July Project Overview - Output Create a community of engineering educators that is: more knowledgeable about proven, effective, and appropriate teaching and assessment methods, more educated themselves in principles and practice of engineering systems operations and practices, and committed to work together to develop, test, and implement innovative and challenging civil engineering curricula and materials.

Minia Univresity Council for Education Affairs Meeting - July Project Overview - Deliverables Create new engineering education materials, in the form of a set of field problems, that can be efficiently and effectively integrated into our university ’ s civil engineering curriculum, where consideration is given to innovative and tested educational practices, and in which consideration can be given to the curricula needs that are not currently addressed.

Minia Univresity Council for Education Affairs Meeting - July Project Overview - Deliverables Develop state-of-the-art data collection and analysis laboratory. The lab will be available for the use of different disciplines and for community outreach/training activities.
