British control of India ~“The Brightest Jewel in the EMPIRES’ crown.”

?? WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ?? 1.) How did Britain first become involved with India? 2.) Please describe the “Sepoy Mutiny”. 3.) How did Britain respond to Indian uprisings?

How does Britain enter India? Through affiliation with the British East India Company. India is diverse with many religions and vast array of culture (tribal heritages).

British East India Company Trading company that provided “Britons” with goods. (spices, textiles, tea.) Had a MONOPOLY over the country. No one else could trade with India!! Main goal: $MAKE MONEY$

“The Company” runs india By 1850, controls 3/5 of India. India is weakened by diversity. Many cultures/religions. Cannot stop the company. Instills western education and government. Use of SEPOY’s as a fighting army. Sepoy – Native Indian fighting for the British power . Have you heard of this “Company” before….think about a popular movie trilogy that debuted in 2003….?

Yo Ho, Yo Ho…. A Pirates’ life for me Pirates of the Caribbean Fictional: “East India Company”. Movie depicts the Company going after pirates who are slowing down their business. “Captain” Jack Sparrow is condemned to hang for crimes against the crown.

Pro’s and con’s of the Company’s rule The Good Built Roads Worked to end slavery within the CASTE SYSTEM. Caste – A specific group you fall into from birth. (I.e. class of society) Also ended SATI -- widow being burned after husbands death. The Bad Forced religion on Indians. Not aware of natives’ culture. View Indians as unable to peacefully rule themselves.

Sepoy Mutiny March of 1857 Mistakes and MUTINY Forgot about certain Indian customs/culture. Company’s policies offend some Indians. Sepoy Mutiny March of 1857 New ammunition cartridge laced with cow and/or pig fat. MANGAL PANDEY (Indian Hero) Hinduism – Cow is sacred being. Islam – Pig is revolting and is not eaten. Indians v.s British >>>>> British stop revolt!!

Mangal Pandey is a sepoy fighter. Leads the mutiny against “East India Company”. Executed in April of 1857 – National HERO

Parliamentary Rule British government steps in and takes control from East India Company after mutiny. Parliament sets up a colonial government. Viceroy – Rules India, follows British orders. [Makes India an extension of Britain] !!DIRECT RULE!! Very “Unequal Partnership”

India Today Indian Nationalism 1930-1940’s Mohandas “the Mahatma” Gandhi campaigns for independence. 1947 ends British rule. Muslim extremist unrest. India split up…. India -- Hindu Pakistan -- Islam India 2010? Soon will be the world’s largest economy.
