The Wacky World of Adjectives

The Purpose of Adjectives Adjectives describe nouns and pronouns: The old tiger was suffering from a bad toothache. This little book has some great ideas. The young band gave the best performance of the year. Adjectives can also come after linking verbs: The big dog appeared gentle.

Adjectives After Linking Verbs Adjectives come after linking verbs. They always describe the subject. Example: The old house was empty several years. The leaves look beautiful in the fall. The hot soup tasted good on a cold day. The young boy appeared sick at first.

What Adjectives Reveal An adjective tells three things about a noun or pronoun: Examples: What kind---small, sour, sharp, pretty Which one---this, that, these, those, my How many----some, all, one, many, two

Examples What kind? The large dog chased the little squirrel up an oak tree. Which One? That mistake is the worst mistake I have ever made. I left my book in my locker at school today. How many? It rained three inches last night.

Definite and Indefinite Articles There are two kinds of Articles: The Definite Article The (singular and plural) The Indefinite Article (no plural) A (singular) An (singular) Note: Both definite and indefinite articles are always adjectives.

Demonstratives Demonstrative pronouns function as adjectives when they come before a noun: This food These books That girl Those girls Example: This old house belongs to my grandmother. Those people attended the game last night.

Proper Nouns Used as Adjectives Some adjectives are formed from proper nouns: NounAdjective SwitzerlandSwiss EnglandEnglish AmericaAmerican FranceFrench SpainSpanish

More than one Adjective More than one adjective can modify the same noun: Examples: These early pioneers suffered many hardships as they traveled West. He saw many beautiful wolves in the mountains. Those strange, large, spotted animals with long necks are called giraffes.

Summary Adjectives describe (modify) nouns and pronouns. They answer three types of questions: What kind? Which one? How many?
