Olga Arbitman Anna Grebneva Dimitriy Mikhaylov BAE Automated Systems: Denver International Airport Baggage-Handling System Case Study Olga Arbitman Anna Grebneva Dimitriy Mikhaylov

Expectations and Outcome To build a fully automated large-scale baggage system that delivers bags from check-in to the aircraft and from aircraft to aircraft or baggage claim. Results: Jammed cars Cars collision Piles of disgorged clothes lying beneath the Telecar’s tracks Outcome: BAE failed to deliver

Short-term Recommendations Create a manual backup system. Automated systems are risky and need a backup. That should’ve been planned from the beginning. Simplify the requirements. The proposed system is enormously complex and, as any research-oriented development, it requires time. To relieve amount of work coming with a manual system, there has to be some automation.

Long-term Recommendations Allow more time!!! Make sure the requirements are 95% finalized and account for users’ needs. Create better prototypes. Revisit solution and evaluate if the new technology planned to be used is reliable enough.
