How many times a day do you use mental Maths?  I have to leave in an hour. Do I have time to put in a load of wash?  I have a quarter tank of petrol. I am driving to Abu Dhabi. Do I need to fill up?  I have 35 Dirhams on me. Do I have enough cash for my shop?

Agenda  A brief introduction to the new curriculum  Expectations by the end of Key Stage 1  The importance of the calculation policy in developing mental Maths strategies  Teaching mental Maths strategies  How can you support at home?

3 Aims of the New NC

Aims of the New NC The aim is for children to do calculations in their heads and, if the numbers are too large, to use a way of writing them down that helps their thinking. Can I solve it in my head? Can I solve it using jottings? Can I solve it using written methods?

Know by heart facts by end of KS1  Find 1 more or one less than any 2 digit number  Count in 2’s, 5’s 10’s  Number bonds to 10 and 20  2, 5, 10 x tables and corresponding division facts  Doubles and halves to 20  Addition facts to 20 and corresponding subtraction facts  Add and take away multiples of 10 from any 2 digit number These are the building blocks for KS2.

Number bonds to 10 and 20  56 + ___ = 60  54 + ___ = 100  100 – 78 =

2, 5, 10 x tables and corresponding division facts  29 x 1000 =  22 x 55 = ( 20 x 50 = and 2 x 5 = )  68 ÷ 2 =

Expectations by end of KS2  All times tables facts and corresponding facts up to 12  Multiply and divide number by 10, 100 and 100 (including decimals)  Number bonds to 60  Number bonds to 100  Double and halve 2 and 3 digit numbers  Know all prime numbers to 30  Find fractions of numbers  Round numbers including up to 2 decimal places  Use equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages to compare proportions

Hooks

Building on what they already know  If I know double 6, I know =  If I can find 1 more or 1 less than a number, I can find 10 more or 10 less than a number  If I know 3 x 5, I know 30 x 50

Mental Maths SAT’s Questions – Year 6  What is 5 squared?  Skates cost fifteen pounds a pair. If you buy four pairs, how much change will you get from a hundred pounds?  What number must be multiplied by six to give two hundred and forty?  Twenty per cent of a class is six. How many children are in the class?  Multiply eight point four by one thousand.

How can you support at home?  Making Maths purposeful  At the shop – find change, round, estimate costs  Games like snap or bingo  Time – If I put the casserole in at 11:15 and it takes 45 minutes to cook, what time will it be finished at?  I have 150 ml of milk but need 200 ml. How many more ml do I need for the recipe? 
