 Georgia O’Keeffe was born on a farm in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She was the second of 7 children in her family.

 Georgia started taking art lessons with her sisters when she was twelve years old. She knew then that she wanted to be an artist when she grew up. Tent Door at Night When she got older she studied art in college and then became an art teacher herself.

 Georgia loved to paint things in nature, especially flowers, like her painting called “Red Poppy”.

 Georgia felt that people were too busy rushing around to notice things in nature like flowers. She painted flowers very close up and sometimes would only show us part of the flower on her canvas. She wanted the viewer to see the flowers in a new way. Vivid colors and organic shapes

 One of Georgia’s friends secretly sent some of her drawings to a famous photographer. He liked them so much he hung them in his gallery. They ended up getting married. He liked to take photographs of Georgia.

 One time, Georgia went on a trip to New Mexico and she fell in love with the way the desert looked. She decided to go back to New Mexico every summer to paint desert landscapes and bones and feathers that she would find.

 After her husband died, Georgia moved to New Mexico living in the desert and painting there until she was almost blind. She was still working at her art until her death at age 98. Georgia O’Keeffe made over 900 paintings in her life!
