INCLUSION IN AMERICAN COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES ACCESS FOR SUCCESS

 Americans With Disabilities Act, 1990  Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, (IDEA) 2004 …Let the shameful wall of exclusion finally come tumbling down…. Former president George H.W. Bush  TRIO Program – Federally funded College Opportunity Program to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their pursuit of a college degree.

The cornerstone of Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) for each child with a disability is an Individual Education Plan (IEP). The IEP specifies the student’s disability (or disabilities) and will focus only on the areas affected by the disability (or disabilities). The IEP specifies what will be the required support for a student to reach academic goal(s) The Individual Education Plan (IEP)

TRANSITION PLAN Individual Student transition plan from high school to higher education Support the student might need in: Employment Education Housing Health Transport Leisure Activities

First national college program to address serious barriers to education. Administered, funded, and implemented by the US Dept of Education.US Dept of Education Includes eight programs targeted to assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post- baccalaureate programs. TRIO also includes a training program for directors and staff of TRIO projects. WHAT IS

EXAMPLES: TRIO PROGRAM Academic Tutoring Personal Counseling Mentoring Financial Guidance, and Direct Support Services for Students Relevant Training for Directors and Staff Other Supports necessary for educational access and retention.
