By Anthony Lewis BAKING IN THE SUN

Solar Power Project I Anthony Lewis, have signed up for the STEM program. I have been assigned a project that involves solar power. Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into energy. Solar power is a renewable resource. Solar power is used for homes, cars, calculators, to pump water and more other uses. I have to design and build a solar powered oven. My oven has to be able to cook 6 1-inch pre cut cookie dough pieces.

So far… Week 1. For this week so for I have design and measured my oven and materials. The materials I have to work with are:  Wooden slabs (various sizes)  Hammer  Nails  Black felt or other absorbent material  Heavy duty aluminum/foil  Power saw  Measuring tape  Gorilla glue  Mirrors  Paint (non-toxic)  Styrofoam  Decorations  Plexiglas

The uses  Aluminum foil: absorb heat and reflect light  Mirrors: reflect light  Styrofoam: holds temperature on the inside  Black felt: attract heat.  Plexiglas: magnify light

So far… Week 1 cont. My oven design has four legs, three or more mirrors above, two handles, an “open roof”, and a door. Once decorated it should look like a monster or a alien.

Designs Here what that “cookie tray” looks likes.

Designs cont. This is the inside of the oven

Design cont. The outside of the oven.

Measurements Cookies  1 inch by 1 inch Cookie tray  Length 7 ½ inches  Width 5 ½ inches  Height 3 inches more or less Oven (mirrors, handles, and leg not included)  Length 15 or more inches  Width 11 or more inches  Height 9 or more inches Legs  Length 3 inches  Width 3 inches  Height 3 inches Handles  Length 4 inches  Width 2 inches  Height 5 inches (space 3 inches)

The processing oven During the process of making the actual oven, it took almost three weeks. While Jalin and I were cutting our wood we made a few adjustments. We didn’t make a door instead we made a hole in a wall of the oven. Then we made a pan that goes in and out of the oven. The pan had the cookie tray attached to it. Also the cookie tray is wrapped in aluminum foil. Also, two of the styrofoam walls were covered in aluminum instead of black felt. There is also a black felt cover for the door. And finally the wall became part of the ovens legs

After the baking. After baking our cookies was forming a giant cookie. If I could change our oven I would:  Make the oven bigger  Change the foil on the pan to felt  Put the cookies on thin paper on the new black felt pan.  And make a roof made out of Plexiglass.
