The World Turning Green ! Global Environment Concerns

THE CHANGING ARCTIC

DESERTIFICATION

Biological diversity is the variety and variability among living organisms and the ecological complexes in which they occur. What is Biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the totality of Genetic diversity Species diversity Ecosystem diversity

Genetic diversity refers to the variation of genes within species. This covers distinct populations of the same species (such as the thousands of traditional rice varieties in India) or genetic variation within a populations

Species diversity refers to the variety of species within region.

Ecosystem diversity consists of : the inhabiting species in all their variety and richness. Many different species, gene-pool abundance, and unique populations are what most people think of when they hear the term "biodiversity". Ecosystem structure Ecosystem functions refers to the physical patterns of life forms Ecological processes create landscapes and diverse environmental conditions out of life itself.

Rainforest are among the most biodiverse Ecosystem in the World Malaysia is one of the 12 world hotspots for Biodiversity

Why is biodiversity so important? We could call it our 'life support system'.

What threatens biodiversity? Many human activities have a negative effect upon our biodiversity. Each time we change the natural environment we change the environment that biodiversity lives in.

MAJOR THREAT TO BIODIVERSITY

YOU HAVE GOT SEVEN YEARS 2010 GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY CHALLENGE BEGINS THE RACE FOR LIFE Can we reverse the tide of environmental destruction in seven years? The global community thinks it can, and aims to achieve a significant reduction in the loss of biodiversity - the living world - by On World Biodiversity Day the Secretary General of the UN calls for everyone to make a pledge to generate momentum towards its preservation.

How Do We Sustain and Preserve

Meeting the increasing demand for biological resources caused by population growth and increased consumption. Increasing our capacity to document and understand biodiversity, its value, and threats to it. Building adequate expertise and experience in biodiversity planning. Improving policies, legislation, guidelines, and fiscal measures for regulating the use of biodiversity. Adopting incentives to promote more sustainable forms of biodiversity use. Action for Biodiversity Sustenance

Promoting trade rules and practices Strengthening coordination within governments, and between governments and stakeholders. Securing adequate financial resources Making better use of technology. Building political support Improving education and public awareness

The passage of the Earth's biodiversity through the coming century will be its most severe test. With human population expected to rise dramatically, particularly in developing countries, and the consumer revolution set for exponential expansion - species and ecosystems will face ever more serious threats. Unless we take action now, children born today will live in an impoverished world.
