1 Biodiversity

2 Bio What? Biodiversity - the variety of all life: plants, animals, micro-organisms, their genes, and the ecosystems they are a part of.

3 Types Genetic diversity-the total genetic info. contained in the genes of all species. Species Diversity- the number of species and the number of individuals in a species. Ecosystem Diversity- the variety of habitats, communities, and ecological processes.

4 Importance Of biodiversity
Humans depend on biodiversity for food, medicine, health, well-being and enjoyment. Food- biodiversity provides a large and varied food source Health- we get medicines from biodiversity

5 More Value of Biodiversity
Recreation Inspiration Escape/Stress Relief

6 Threats to biodiversity
Habitat loss and fragmentation Competition from invasive species Pollution Global climate change Desertification Population growth and over consumption Unsustainable use of natural resources.

7 Invasive Species non-native (or alien) species to the which
Adult - David Cappaert Invasive.org. non-native (or alien) species to the which cause or are likely to cause harm. Invasive species can be plants, animals, and other organisms (e.g., microbes). Human actions are the primary means of invasive species introductions.

8 Consequences of loss of Biodiversity
A loss of ecosystem services - Protection of water resources, nutrient storage and cycling, Pollution breakdown and absorption Loss of genetic diversity- Genetic diversity allows species to adapt to changing environmental conditions and stresses. Reduced food security.

9 Preservation of Biodiversity
Wild life reserves- e.g. National Parks. Endangered species Program Education Breeding Programs
