Lesson 5-2 Example Solve. HEALTH Teenagers should consume at least 1,300 milligrams of calcium per day. Tanika drank a glass of milk with 300 milligrams of calcium at breakfast. At lunch, she had some cheese with 207 milligrams of calcium and yogurt with 415 milligrams of calcium. How much more calcium does she need to consume to meet the recommended daily intake?

Lesson 5-2 Example UnderstandRead the problem. Write what you know. Tanika needs at least 1,300 milligrams of calcium per day. She already had 300 milligrams, 207 milligrams, and 415 milligrams.

Lesson 5-2 Example PlanPick a strategy. One strategy to use is to work backward. Start with the total calcium for the day. Subtract what Tanika has already had. Use that number to write an inequality.

Lesson 5-2 Example Solve 1,300–300=1,000 Total calcium–Breakfast=Subtotal Is the last number the most or the least calcium that Tanika should have at dinner? least Write the inequality. c  378 1,000–207= –415=378 Subtotal–Lunch=Dinner

Lesson 5-2 Example CheckAdd the milligrams of calcium that Tanika had for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This should be at least 1,300.
