British Sign Language Course Tutors – Mrs Howgate Mrs Orme

British Sign Language After a long campaign British Sign Language was given official status in 2003 It is used by more people than Welsh in the UK Level 2 is a GCSE equivalent This course will lead to CACDP level 1 and then move onto a level 2 qualification. Both certificates are recognised by employers The disability discrimination act in 1995 states that employers must provide interpreters to allow disabled people equal access. It is a minimum requirement for some jobs eg Teacher of the Deaf etc

Who would be interested in doing this course next year? Deaf and Hearing Impaired Students Language impaired Students People who are interested in learning another language Friends of Deaf students Employment links with becoming an Interpreter, Speech Therapy, Teachers of Deaf, Audiologists, social worker for the Deaf, ENT doctor etc

Pre Course Requirements Must have a good reason for learning it Must have some knowledge of some signs and taken part in lunch clubs, the Christmas Concert etc You probably know who you are and have been thinking about learning more sign language already Come and discuss your questions with someone in the HLC

Course Content Learn how to communicate using signs, facial expressions, and body language. Deaf Awareness Learn how to finger spell and vocabulary for every day communication Understand how the grammatical system works for BSL, such as tenses, placement and hand shapes Learn expressive and receptive skills required for communicating with Deaf people Learn about regional differences with signs Only assessed on signing skills so you will be videoed- but there is no reading or writing

Cottenham Village College 3 lessons a week over 2 years Will involve some homework and practise in your own time- meeting Deaf people when you can Need to be committed and enthusiastic There are 2 tutors here Mrs Howgate and Mrs Orme, but also lots of students and other staff you can practise with.
