September 11th

 Journal Prompt: What are some ways of finding peace within yourself?  Give a few examples of things you do now or know about.  You will have 5 minutes to write and then you’ll share with your group.

September 21 st : the same day every year

 September 21st is known around the globe as International Peace Day or World Peace Day. First recognized in 1981, this holiday asks that world leaders from every country ask their military and their people to cease fire for one day. It is a day dedicated to the absence of war.

 Choose a group leader, recorder, reporter for the following discussion.  All group members should participate and share ideas from their general knowledge.

 Step 1: With your group, brainstorm a list of conflicts that are happening around the world: Israel-Palestine, Iraq, etc. Take about 5 minutes to think of some ideas.  Step 2: Generate a list of reasons why people fight: religion, economics, etc.  What are some of the reasons you listed about why people fight? Take about 5 minutes for this.

 Step 3: Each group will discuss and be ready to present possible solutions that could address the causes.  You are not trying to solve a particular world crisis, but rather are trying to identify solutions that can work in general (education, tolerance, debt relief, etc.).  Step 4: Make a simple poster that you will later present to the class.  You can draw images that express your solution or use reasons in words. You are free to create your own poster!

 Step 5: Present your poster, explaining the possible solutions you and your group think of. This will happen the Monday after Chuseok, so you can take your posters home or I can keep them for you if you finish today.

 On Peace Day, who will you make peace with?  Think about it.

 Watch the 32 minute video by Jeremy Gilley, a film maker and ambassador of Peace Day: who After you watch the film, write a 1 – 2 paragraph response (on the computer) sharing your thoughts and reflections from the film. This will count as one of our makeup classes, so if you don’t do the assignment, you will be marked absent for a class.

 While you watch the video, fill out the “Day After Peace” Worksheet I give you.  Be prepared to share some of your ideas with your group.  This makeup assignment is due September 25 th in class.  Any questions?
