Presentation transcript:

A Race to Get Water Do Now: You have been studying and researching the drought in the last two weeks. Imagine you are explaining the drought to someone who has never heard of it before. You may only write two sentences summarizing all of your prior knowledge of the drought.

Reflecting on What We Already Know Based off of last week’s research, you have gained insight into the causes and effects of the drought. You organized your very own opinion and claims in regards to whether or not water resources should be limited in order to conserve water.

Objective We will thoroughly analyze an informational text using context clues and prior knowledge. Standards:L : Acquire and use accurately a range of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening at the college and career readiness level; demonstrate independence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when encountering an unknown term important to comprehension or expression. Reading 1.0: Students apply their knowledge of word origins to determine the meaning of new words encountered in reading materials and use those words accurately.

Vocabulary We Will Use physical map: a map that shows how a given area of land appears drought: a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall Serengeti: a vast plain in Tanzania known for its wildlife

Ready…Set…Read You have a choice of either…Reading the article independently, OR reading it quietly with your partner.

Stations #1- You will highlight SEVEN words of your choice from the text that you find significant to the central idea. For each word you highlight, explain the significance in once sentence. #2- You will work with a partner to collaborate about your connection to the text. You may either put your name on one paper and both write your responses, OR write them on separate papers.

Continued… #3- You will reflect on the research you have done in the past week and write a ONE paragraph response, including the new information you learned today. Talk with your group, work together, OR independently.
