SOUTH SUDAN Food Security and Livelihoods and Nutrition cluster linkages 18th July 2014 Juba

SOUTH SUDAN Needs: The updated IPC has indicated that 3.9 million people are projected to be being in crisis and emergency phases: 2.6 million in crisis 1.3 m in emergency In addition, 3,3 m are classified in stress

SOUTH SUDAN Cluster strategy: Based on the IPC results, the cluster should be looking at: 1. Ensure access to food for the population in the IPC Emergency phase and a portion of those in Crisis 2. Support livelihoods for the population in the IPC Crisis phase and a portion of the population in Emergency and boost production to improve general availability of food, including livestock products. The overarching priority for the cluster is to ensure and protect immediate access to food and prevent the collapse of livelihoods among the most vulnerable households, such as those headed by women or children. The cluster will also help crisis-affected communities to maintain and recover their coping mechanisms as quickly as possible while protecting livelihood systems in areas that are indirectly affected by the crisis.

SOUTH SUDAN Cluster targets.

SOUTH SUDAN Cluster achievements:. Cluster objectives IndicatorsTargetsAchieved June Ensure access to foodNumber of people assisted with food and conditional/unconditional cash transfer 2.4 m 1,145,893 (June) Livelihoods supportNumber of households assisted with emergency livelihoods support 550,000 households/ 3.3 m 168,179 HHs (cumulative)

SOUTH SUDAN Cluster structure:. 1 Cluster leads: WFP FAO 2 cluster co coordinators WFP and FAO and one cluster co-chair: MC 1 IM plus 2 assistants 1 M&E 4 area cluster coordinators 4 working groups

SOUTH SUDAN Constraints and Challenges: Access to most affected areas Humanitarian deliveries may require the support of armed escorts or escalating costs due to elevated risk taken by transporters. If insecurity remains widespread through large swathes of the country, there will be a dramatic increase in costs due to a greater reliance on air transport – something that is already anticipated given the nature of the rainy season. En enabling and secure working environment on the ground for both stocks and aid workers needs to be ensured

SOUTH SUDAN Opportunities with the Nutrition cluster: Partners Targeted areas/beneficiaries Nutrition sensitive programming (distribution of crops and vegetables seeds nutritionally enriched. Extra calories for pregnant and lactating mother) Utilization of food : nutrition messaging Importance of WASH and nutrition treatment.
