Why Should I Trust the Bible? February 9

What do you think … What role does communication play in relationships? It is exciting to know that God has communicated to us and continues to do so. – Today we look at what the psalmist had to say about God’s communication to him – We will study two portions from the longest chapter in the Bible … Psalm 119

Listen for synonyms used to refer to God’s Word. Psalm 119: (NIV) Righteous are you, O Lord, and your laws are right. [138] The statutes you have laid down are righteous; they are fully trustworthy. [139] My zeal wears me out, for my enemies ignore your words. [140] Your promises have been thoroughly tested, and your servant loves them.

Listen for synonyms used to refer to God’s Word. [141] Though I am lowly and despised, I do not forget your precepts. [142] Your righteousness is everlasting and your law is true. [143] Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands are my delight. [144] Your statutes are forever right; give me understanding that I may live.

Righteous, Pure, and True So what words were used in these verses a synonyms for God’s Word? What are some of the words he used to describe God’s Word? What are some reasons people today question the reliability of the Bible?

Righteous, Pure, and True Consider some of the reasons that we can believe in the reliability of the Bible … Archeology – Locations and events in Scripture agree with archeological findings – Historical accuracy

Righteous, Pure, and True Consider some of the reasons that we can believe in the reliability of the Bible … Multitude of manuscripts: – Vast numbers of both OT and NT manuscripts – Contrast with so few manuscripts of other ancient literary works – The many manuscripts demonstrate agreement

Righteous, Pure, and True Consider some of the reasons that we can believe in the reliability of the Bible … Internal evidence: – Many eyewitness accounts – Bible tells one story with consistency … written over 1500 years with 40 different authors on 3 different continents

Righteous, Pure, and True For what did the psalmist pray? In light of his prayer, what role should God’s Word play in our lives?

Righteous, Pure, and True Think of it carefully. Study it prayerfully. Deep in your heart, let its oracles dwell. Ponder its mystery. Sleight not its history. For none ever loved it too fondly or well.

Blessed when We Follow God’s Word In our culture, what are typical sources of advice people look to on things such as work and career, finances, raising kids, etc. Listen for how God’s Word should be the source.

Psalm 119:1-8 (NIV) Blessed are they whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. [2] Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart. [3] They do nothing wrong; they walk in his ways. [4] You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed.

Listen for how God’s Word should be the source. [5] Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees! [6] Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands. [7] I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws. [8] I will obey your decrees; do not utterly forsake me.

Blessed when We Follow God’s Word Again, what synonyms did the psalmist use to represent God’s Word? According to these verses, who will be blessed? What does the psalmist vow to do in regard to God’s Word? What results from his being committed to God’s Word?

Blessed when We Follow God’s Word How should we read and study God’s Word? Rick Warren’s 40 Days in the Word course suggested questions based on the phrase SPACE PETS. For the passage we have just studied, let’s apply these questions. – Sin to confess? – Promise to claim? – Attitude to change? SPACE PETS

Blessed when We Follow God’s Word For the passage we have just studied, let’s apply these questions. – Command to obey? – Example to follow? – Prayer to pray? – Error to avoid? – Truth to believe? – Something to praise God for? SPACE PETS

Application The Word of God is righteous, reliable, practical, eternal, and life giving – God’s Word is righteous and reliable because He is righteous and reliable – Ask God to give you a love for His Word and the desire to obey it

Application The blessing of the Lord comes to those who are diligent and faithful to live according to His Word – Instructions for avoiding sin and knowing God’s expectations are found in God’s Word – Living according to God’s Word calls for devotion, a willingness to learn it, and a commitment to apply it to your life. – Make the commitment to daily read and apply what God has to say to you.
