What is community service? Community service is donated (not paid) service or activity that is performed by someone or a group of people for the benefit of the community.

What are the positive social outcomes of community service for you? Meet new people Make a difference Have fun Feel better about yourself Feel an increased sense of community Increase your productivity Learn a new skill Use skills you already have Give hope to others Help make others happy Feel valued and appreciated Give your life purpose

What are the career and educational benefits of community service? Opportunities for students to become active, positive contributors to society Helps students acquire academic skills and knowledge Studies have shown increases in positive feelings and decreases in depression and stress—“Feel Good” feeling Improves communication skills Exposure to diversity, multiculturalism and different ways of thinking Increase critical and problem solving skills Opportunities to receive scholarships College application forms Employment

Which activities are NOT community service? Fundraising for a church or school club Working for free at a store Babysitting for free for family Helping a relative fix a car Community service is helping in the community. It includes not for profit activities BUT not for your family, friends or relatives.

What is Step 1? The first step is to explore what type of community service you want to do. Here are some samples of community service opportunities you can do: Cleaning a park Collecting items for charity such as clothes, food, or furniture Getting involved with Habitat for Humanity Volunteering at your elementary school Helping the elderly in nursing homes Volunteering at the Veterans Hospital Helping out at a local library by shelving and putting books in order Tutoring elementary school children Serving food at a food bank Help with hands-on activities at the Science Center

What is step 2? You must contact an organization to find the one that fits you. You may also research organizations on the Internet. Here are some ideas to help you.
