Welcome to Year 9 Options Information Evening Wednesday 28 th January 2015

Aims of this Evening Highlight option choices available at Grove The process of selecting options What support is available for you and your son/daughter An opportunity to speak to subject teachers and other staff about the subjects on offer

What has happened so far? All students have also had the opportunity to: Discuss subject choices with their Guidance Leader Discuss subject choices with subject teachers Focus in PSHEE/C All students have been provided with resources to inform their subject choices

Qualifications Structure All qualifications completed are given a specific level from 1 - 8

Qualifications Structure In Years 10 – 11 most students will gain up to Level 2 qualifications like GCSE’s Students who are not ready for level 2 will study for level 1 qualifications (we will suggest students who should study at level 1)

Qualifications Structure In post–16 education students can gain level 3 qualifications like A levels or level 2 qualifications (both offered at Grove College) Vocational qualifications and apprenticeships are also available at level 3 at post - 16

Qualifications Structure Beyond level 3 qualifications students can access higher education qualifications (e.g. undergraduate degree)

Choosing Subjects Students have subjects that they must study – these are called core subjects Students have subjects they can choose to study– these are called option subjects

Core Subjects English Language & English Literature Maths Science ICT Religious Studies PSHEE/C PE There is no exam in PSHEE/C or PE

Option Subjects Art and Design Business Studies Child Development Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE) D&T- Electronics D&T- Food D&T- Product Design D&T- Textiles Drama French Geography German History ICT Media Studies Music Physical Education (Cambridge Technical) Spanish

Subject Selection Students will need to do the following: Select three subjects Select a reserve subject Select a ‘Third Session’ subject (optional)

How should my child select their options? Your child needs to consider: Use the checklist on the back of the options booklet Select a wide range of subjects to keep future career paths open Speak to your Tutor Speak to your Subject Teacher

How should my child select their options? Parents please listen out for: “My friend is doing…….” “My favourite teacher is……” Not good reasons to select a subject!

Third Session This provides students with the opportunity to study an additional GCSE after school. This is offered in: Art and Design Spanish Third session is dependent on a viable number of students selecting this as an option in each subject

Broad and balanced curriculum It is important that students select a range of subjects that will enable them to access further and higher education When considering a broad and balanced curriculum students may want to consider selecting a combination of: A language An Humanities-based subject A Technology-based subject A Creative/Performing Arts-based subject

How will the options be selected? On Monday 2 nd February in Tutor time the following process will happen: Each tutor will be allocated a computer room Students will access the options form from Moodle (students will need to know their Grove School ) Students complete online form Letter sent home to parents to confirm option choices with reply slip

What results will my child get? Target setting in school is ambitious Work hard for the results you want!
