William Madison Randall Library: Fostering Student Success

Presentation: Outline Fostering Student UNCW – Resources + learner-centered services + physical and virtual spaces + commitment to assessment = student success – 21 st Century Challenges Important Developments in Scholarly Communication, Higher Education and Educational Technology for Academic Libraries – Pacing the Future - Randall Library Responds Initiatives Solutions

Fostering Student Success Resources Learner-Centered Services Physical and Virtual Spaces Commitment to Assessment

Fostering Student Success Resources – 21 st Century Challenges Supporting the academic core Escalating user expectations Serials landscape and pricing Journal marketplace Finding the resources to support collections

Fostering Student Success Resources – 21 st Century Challenges Metaphorically speaking...

Fostering Student Success Resources – 21 st Century Challenges Supporting the [evolving] academic core – Providing access to research materials in support of research endeavors in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, and in transdisciplinary contexts Supporting the academic core in these fiscal times Stewardship - - balancing information, reference and research needs - - the needs of students, faculty and staff, against our bottom line Near-and-long-term implications of collection reductions

Fostering Student Success Resources – 21 st Century Challenges Escalating user expectations – Ever expanded access – Platform-independent access (mobile, tablets and more) – Everything “e” – Enhanced search and discovery (e-journal packages, bundles+) – Full-text options Escalating usage

Fostering Student Success Resources – 21 st Century Challenges Serials landscape and pricing – eJournals, e-journal packages, open access – Pricing » Average prices for science, technology and medical serials remain the highest » The “Big Deal” e-journal package continues to dominate academic library purchasing » The % average price increase is expected to remain stagnant for 2015, hovering in the 6% to 7% range. That 6% seems to be a level of inflation that is neither too hot for libraries nor too cold for publishers, so for the time being, 5.5% is a safe bet. However it is only April, and a lot could change before 2015 pricing is finalized. (Periodicals Price Survey 2014, the-evolutionary-road-periodicals-price-survey-2014/)

Fostering Student Success Resources – 21 st Century Challenges Journal marketplace – 2015 forecast – “The 2015 serials marketplace will still see steady increases in prices, while the development of scholarly communications and libraries will continue to be in flux. Budget compression, price inflation, and questions of value will collide with OA trends, government mandates, new evaluation tools such as altmetrics, and the increased distribution of information offered by research platforms and social networks.” (Periodicals Price Survey 2014, evolutionary-road-periodicals-price-survey-2014/)

Fostering Student Success Resources – 21 st Century Challenges Finding the resources to support collections – Periodicals Price Survey 2014 (~21 years of data) evolutionary-road-periodicals-price-survey-2014/ evolutionary-road-periodicals-price-survey-2014/ – Trends » Serial prices have increased significantly and represent the largest inflationary factor for library budgets » Steady increase in the cost of journal literature » Ongoing inflation » Diminished library budgets » Outdated materials’ budget models

Fostering Student Success Resources – Pacing the Future - Randall Library Responds Implications for leadership and stewardship – Rethinking the Materials Budget – Leveraging the Materials Budget » Interlibrary Loan » The power of 17 » NC LIVE – Data-driven collection development » Collection reduction » Measuring the value of journals – Creative resource recovery » One-time funds » Grants

Fostering Student Success Learner-Centered Services – 21 st Century Challenges Supporting online, hybrid, and collaborative learning Shift from students as consumers to students as creators Hosting services that support creativity and production (makerspaces, transformative learning technologies labs+) Scaling service innovations Keeping services relevant Doing more – or doing different(ly), with less

Fostering Student Success Learner-Centered Services – Pacing the Future - Randall Library Responds Meeting and anticipating student needs through responsive, data-driven service design and delivery – Portals, platforms – Tutorials and guides – Embedded , chat or text – Services optimized for mobile, tablets+ Finding the resources to support services – Ongoing assessment of “same old, same old” » Research consultation, one-on-one help » Citation and bibliography help » Workshops, tours and instruction – Position re-design

Fostering Student Success Physical Spaces – 21 st Century Challenges Purposing and repurposing public spaces to meet and anticipate student needs through informed and responsive space planning Constituent engagement in all aspects of space planning – Pacing the Future - Randall Library Responds Learning Commons 3 Technology Enhanced Collaboration Space (TECS) Group studies

Fostering Student Success Virtual Spaces – 21 st Century Challenges Growing ubiquity of social media – Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Flickr, YouTube, Tumblr, Instagram+ Using social media – To promote library services, resources and facilities – For teaching and learning Using social networks – As professional communities of practice – As learning communities – As a platform to share stories about topics students are studying in class

Fostering Student Success Virtual Spaces – Pacing the Future – Randall Library Responds Library site search (Web-style browsing) WorldCat Local (Web-scale discovery solution facilitating access locally and globally) Migration to Sierra (integrated library system/library service platform) Commitment to cloud-ready architecture and hosting Digital asset management -

Fostering Student Success Commitment to assessment – 21 st Century Challenges The state of higher ed analytics Demonstrating value requires valid statistical data – Pacing the Future – Randall Library Responds Assessment in Action Communicating value Faculty research productivity Library impact on faculty/staff Library impact on students Student experience/engagement Student learning outcomes Student retention

Fostering Student Success Questions? – Resources – Learner-Centered Services – Physical and Virtual Spaces – Commitment to Assessment – Other?
