Tool Safety

Rule #1 – Do Not Fall On Your Drill

We Will Discuss… Causes of Tool Related Injuries Using The Right Tool For the Job Tool Inspection Use of Proper PPE Power Tool Guarding Proper Tool Handling

Injury Causes Injuries are usually the result of:  Improper tool use, or  Failing to…  Inspect the tool before use  Use Personal Protective Equipment  Use guards  Properly store the tool  Use safe handling techniques

Use The Right Tool For The Job

Do Not Use: –A screwdriver as a chisel –A 2x4 or the “butt” of a drill as a hammer –A bucket or a chair as a ladder Use The Right Tool For The Job

Get a Bigger Ladder!!

Inspect Tools For Damage  Inspect wrenches for sprung jaws  Inspect chisels and wedges for mushroomed heads  Check for loose, cracked or splintered handles (tools with taped handles may be hiding cracks) Crack

Inspect Tools For Damage Check for visible wear and tear Are all guards in place? Are handles free of splits and cracks? Are electric tools double-insulated or properly grounded? (GFCI’s) Are cutting edges sharp? (saw blades, bits, etc…) Inspect before use

Choose The Right PPE

Proper PPE?

Use Guards Guard: Belts Gears Shafts Pulleys Flywheels Chains Never remove a guard while the machine or tool is turned on

Guarding Machine guards must protect the operator and others from:  Point of operation  In-running nip points  Rotating parts  Flying chips and sparks

The point of operation is where the work is actually performed on the materials – it must be guarded Point of Operation This shows a radial arm saw equipped with proper point of operation guards

In-Running Nip Points Nip Points NOT adequately guarded

Flying Chips and Sparks

Store Tools Properly Roll-A-Bed

Store Tools Properly

Handle Tools Properly Do Not:  Carry portable tools by the cord  Use electric cords to hoist or lower tools  Yank cord or hose to disconnect it  Work near heat, oil, or sharp edges No-No

Remember… Injuries are usually the result of:  Improper tool use, or  Failing to…  Inspect the tool before use  Use Personal Protective Equipment  Use guards  Properly store the tool  Use safe handling techniques
