New practices and technologies to address first principles of learning Panel Presentation for NLII Focus Session Learning Environment Design Vancouver, B.C., May 31, 2002 Timothy A. Pychyl

First Principles Learning is facilitated when: l learner engaged in solving real-world problems l existing knowledge is activated as a foundation for new knowledge l new knowledge is applied by learner l new knowledge is integrated into the learner’s world

First Principle Engagement in learning by doing a meaningful (authentic?) task.

Panel Question 1 What are some of the most effective design, teaching and learning strategies that have been explored in professional, continuous and corporate learning, as well as higher education?

Teaching/Learning Strategies u Virtual classroom interaction u Simulations u Flexible Access to materials u Hybrid courses

Design strategy Reflective Practitioner

Activity starts here: Mouse over Navigation Learning activities Lecturing How do I connect? Activity Observe Mouse over Analyse Mouse over Research Mouse over Reflect Mouse over Apply and Seek Feedback Mouse over How do I connect with my student? Design Strategies

u Mouse-over “Research” will provide objectives of this activity. u Mouse-overs on the “circles” will provide information about what each section provides. u Each section will open a smaller pop up window displaying the list of available resources on “How do I connect”. u Add to the resource bank: user upload documents they want to share for feedback and add to resource data base (template needs to be created) Continue Virtual community Downloadable documents Suggested readings Article abstracts On line resources IDO videos 3M videos Resources Navigation Learning activities Lecturing How do I connect? Activity Observe Analyze Research Reflect Apply and Seek Feedback Research Research (Mouse over) (Mouse over) Add to resource bank Mouse over

u Mouse-overs describe each choice and also the general goal of the activity. u To enter each section, click on the section u The user may only enter some sections, depending on what he/she has already done. u He/she may enter the “Research” section at any time. u If a student has entered a section, it will show up as lighter in color (so he knows where he’s been) Activity starts here: Mouse over Navigation Learning activities Lecturing How do I connect? Activity Observe Mouse over Analyse Mouse over Research Mouse over Reflect Mouse over Apply and Seek Feedback Mouse over How do I connect with my student? (Back 1st menu)

Panel Question 2 How are the existing technologies being used to support the teaching and learning strategies?

Next generation Web sites... u Interactive u Individualized service features u Simplified, user-centered navigation u Unique to institution, reflects values u Database driven u Personal portal Stoner, M. (March, 2000). Getting Personal: Campuses recruit students with interactive and individualized Web offerings. Case Currents,

What’s behind learning... “The reason we’re here is because someone important once listened to us. Not because someone once told us something.” Janet Emig, English professor, to a group of teachers; quoted in Peter Elbow’s What is English? (1990, MLA)

Technology making the institution more personal

“I think also what we're seeing is that there are going to be mixed modes of delivery. There's going to be hybrid modes. There's not one perfect way to do this. And what an institution decides to do is really going to depend on its student body, what kinds of students it's teaching, what their needs are. Are they 18 to 22, or are they adult learners who have full- time jobs?” Tuesday, March 12, 2002 Diane Harley Director of the Higher Education in the Digital Age Project Center for Studies in Higher Education, University of California at Berkeley

“An MIT education requires a combination of the content in conjunction with a faculty member and the critical element, the students, mixed together in an environment that supports inquiry and provides first-rate facilities to support the pursuit of knowledge. I would say that some variation of this would be true of any institution. The faculty's choice of materials and their choice of delivery vehicles for those materials are important but insufficient in fully defining what it is to get an education at the university.” Open Knowledge and Open Source Initiatives: An Interview with MIT's Phil Long by Steven W. Gilbert and Phillip LongSteven W. GilbertPhillip Long March/April 2002

Panel Question 3 What new tools or practices do we need to support these first principles in technology enhanced instruction?

Practices - Collaboration!

Graphic Designer Instructional Designer Corporate Partner 3M Fellow Content Expert E-learning specialist Also includes: programmers, usability expert, research assistants

Vision + Strategic Planning + Time + Resources

New Tools & Skills Tools l LOR l Middleware Skills l Negotiation l Time management l Teamwork

Final thought How can we identify what kinds of learning and teaching require learning environments like this at the curriculum level?
