Who We Are Founded in 1919, the Institute of International Education (IIE) is a private nonprofit leader in the international exchange of people and ideas. In collaboration with governments, foundations and other sponsors, IIE creates programs of study and training for students, educators and professionals from all sectors. IIE was established in 1919 in the aftermath of World War I by Nobel Peace Prize winners Nicholas Murray Butler, President of Columbia University, and Elihu Root, former Secretary of State, and by Stephen Duggan, Sr., Professor of Political Science at the College of the City of New York and IIE's first President.

Mission and Values The Institute of International Education (IIE) fosters mutual understanding, develops global leaders, and protects academic freedom worldwide through educational exchange and training programs that advance the vision of Opening Minds to the World ®. Promoting closer educational relations between the people of the United States and those of other countries. Strengthening and linking institutions of higher learning globally. Rescuing threatened scholars and advancing academic freedom. Building leadership skills and enhancing the capacity of individuals and organizations to address local and global challenges.

What We Do IIE is a world leader in the exchange of people and ideas. IIE administers over 200 programs serving more than 20,000 individuals each year. IIE provides & administers programs for many corporations, foundations, government partners, and international agencies. Types of Programs: Fellowships and Scholarship Management Global Leadership Development Higher Education Institutional Development Emergency Assistance for Scholars and Students International Education Services

Moscow Representative Office IIE’s Moscow office was established in 1993 to support energy training programs funded by the U.S. government. In 1994 IIE expanded its work to include student advising and corporate programming In 2000 the office began administration of the Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program Today IIE Moscow works with the Fulbright Program, the Alcoa Foundation, PepsiCo and ExxonMobil, as well as with New York University Abu Dhabi, PetroCanada’s Libyan Workforce Readiness Program, and other activities.

International Fellowships Program IFP is a fellowship program uniquely designed to promote social justice, community development, and access to higher education. The program supports talented individuals from marginalized social groups, and encourages them to use their leadership skills and knowledge to work toward positive social change in their home communities and countries.

Program Overview: A total of 258 Finalists from 77 regions throughout Russia, including: Males, 80 persons Females, 178 persons 153 Masters Degree Candidates 85 PhD Candidates As of 15 October 2010, 187 Program Alumni 65% (168 persons) remained in Russia for study, with the most popular study programs at – Moscow State University (51 persons) – Moscow Higher School of Social and Economic Research (25 persons) – St. Petersburg State University (21 persons) – Higher School of Economics (12 persons)

Alcoa Technical Education Support Program in Russia Six years in Russia Fellowship support for 254 students and 39 young teachers in three key cities of the Russian Federation Partner Universities include: – Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys – Don State Technical University – Samara State Aerospace University

Alcoa Technical Education Support Program in Russia Successful study and graduation of fellowship recipients – More than 80% of student fellows who have completed their degrees now work within their specialties – Nearly 20% have continued on to graduate level studies Defense of advanced degrees by young faculty – Over 25% of faculty fellows have already defended their master’s theses Improvement of classroom and training facilities – 4 multimedia lecture rooms – a language laboratory – a unique hydraulic press for student use This year the program expects to support: – 60 Student Fellowships, – 13 Junior Faculty – 20 Stipends to Technical College Students – Continued support for equipment purchases Created a model for other fellowship programs in Russia

PepsiCo Community Social Responsibility Program Supporting Russian Higher Education in Agriculture Similar to the Alcoa program, the PepsiCo program supports student fellowships, equipment purchases, and additional activities at a select number of agrarian and agriculture related universities throughout Russia Partner Universities currently include Don State Technical University Kuban State Agrarian University Timiryazev State Agrarian University Don State Agrarian University Stavropol State Agrarian University St. Petersburg State Agrarian University

Program Activities: – 40 Student Stipends – 60 Student Stipends 2010 Summer School in Agro- Ecological Management at Timiryazev State Agrarian University in Moscow – participation of 23 students from universities around Russia – U.S. expert lecturer Equipment purchases Additional faculty and expert trainings, lectures, seminars, and conferences support for collaborative research among faculty members PepsiCo directly works with some of these partners to provide additional support – including a recent 3,000,000 Ruble donation to Kuban State Agrarian University

Results Increased support for study and training in agricultural sectors Increased mobility between agrarian universities Opportunities for joint research, and professional/ academic networking within Russia and with international experts Elevation of equipment and teaching facilities at partner universities
