ADHD Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

 Children with ADHD generally have problems paying attention or concentrating. They can't seem to follow directions and are easily bored or frustrated with tasks. They also tend to move constantly and are impulsive, not stopping to think before they act.

 Lack of attention  Fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork  Does not seem to listen when spoken to directly  Is easily distracted  Hyperactivity Fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat Runs about or climbs in inappropriate situations Is often "on the go," acts as if "driven by a motor," talks excessively  Impulsive behavior Blurts out answers before questions have been completed Has difficulty awaiting turn Interrupts or intrudes on others (butts into conversations or games)

There is no single test used to diagnose attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. ADHD is diagnosed after a person has shown some or all of symptoms of ADHD on a regular basis for more than six months. Health care providers, such as pediatricians and child psychologists can diagnose ADHD. The diagnosis involves gathering information from several sources, including schools, caregivers, and parents. The health care provider will consider how a child's behavior compares with other children the same age.

 Treatment for ADHD is multifaceted. It consists of ADHD medications or behavioral therapy or both. ADHD treatment should be adjusted to meet the needs of the child who has ADHD as well as the needs of the family.

 Learning Disability  Conduct Disorder  Anxiety & Depression  Bipolar Disorder

About half of children with ADHD will continue to have symptoms as adults. However, adults are often more able to control behavior and cover difficulties. These adults may have failed at school, work, or relationships. Many have had multiple traffic accidents. For some adults, a diagnosis of ADHD can bring a sense of relief.
