Software Software an important part for any system can be listed as OS = Operating System e.g. Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux Programs – Games, Production, and other software

Types Of Software There are three types of software that can be acquired online Shareware – Try before You buy Freeware – No Cost Programs Abandonware – Copyrights and other licensing trademarks are no longer valid

Software: installation, removal I will show you on how to install and remove software in Windows Vista/7/8. You may still use XP. That’s OK. I will show that as well. Live Demo!

Using Cleaning Software There are many cleaning software that is used to remove software that is harmful to a PC I will show you 2 cleaning programs: CC Cleaner Advanced SystemCare Revo Uninstaller & Glary Utilities Absolute Uninstaller by Glarysoft

File Fragmentation Over a period of time a computer’s hard drive data becomes fragmented and out of place leading to poor performance Defragmentation software is needed to move data closer together Live Demo!

System Registry The System Registry is a database that Windows OS keeps critical data in. Examples: Product Keys, Serial numbers, Registration codes Key information for programs and data

Registry Care Cleaning the Registry will remove old and invalid data much like cleaning you computer of spyware and other data Registry Defragmentation is also needed to clean up what old data is left behind Live Demo!

Antivirus Software Antivirus software is used to remove or prevent virus from accessing your PC. When combined with a firewall will reduce chances of infection. You are only allowed to have one anti-virus software on a PC. Internal conflicts can happen. See Handout B for a list of antivirus software

Firewall Firewalls are layers of protection to lower chances of harmful software getting into your PC. There are two types: Software and Hardware It is recommended to have a software and hardware firewall. Unlike Anti-virus software they won’t interfere with each other.

Web Add-On’s and Toolbars Web Add-on’s and Toolbars are web browser extras that can either add extra protection or ease of access to websites. Here are two examples: Roboform – Login/Password Manager Orbit Downloader – used to download flash videos from sites like youtube

Troubleshooting your PC Troubleshooting your PC is not a set of directions to follow but more of a logical state of mind Fixing a problem is mainly trial and error and it’s hard to explain. Think of every thing that you did and you find the solution.

Backup Backup Backup! Over time your computer can crash or your hard drive can fail. If your computer crashes and if you have to reinstall Windows you will loose everything. If your hard drive fails you will loose everything. So to keep from loosing your important stuff make a backup. You can back up your stuff to a 2nd hard drive or burn your data to a CD or DVD.
