Chapter 1.1

FDD ( Floppy Disk Drive) Needs a data cable for connection Has two 34-pin drive connectors and one 34-pin connector for the drive controller Can be used to boot the computer if it contains a bootable floppy disk Uses removable 3.5-inch floppy disks Disks can store 720 KB or 1.44 MB of data

HDD (Hard Disk Drives ) MAGNETIC STATE: Magnetic storage device Permanent storage for data Configured as the drive and contains the operating system and applications The first drive in the boot sequence. Storage is measured in billions of bytes, or gigabytes (GB). Speed is measured in revolutions per minute (RPM SOLID STATE: do not have moving parts. (no drive motors and moving parts) uses far less energy volatile flash memory chips manage all storage Faster data access uses ATA or SATA interfaces

OPTICAL DRIVES Compact Disc (CD) 7 Types of Optical Media Digital versatile Disc (DVD) CD-ROM- Pre-recorded read only memory Blu-ray Disc (BD) CD-R- One time recordable media can be pre-recorded (read-only) CD-RW- rewritable can be recorded, erased, re-recorded. recordable (write once) DVD-ROM- media that is pre-recorded re-recordable (read and write multiple times DVD-RAM- can be recorded, erased, and re-recorded. CDs have a data storage capacity of approximately DVD+/-R- Can be recorded one time. 700 MB DVD+/-RW- rewritable can be recorded, erased, re-recorded. DVDs have a data storage capacity of approximately BD-ROM -pre-recorded with movies, games, or software 4.3 GB on a single-layer disc & approximately 8.5 BD-R- record HD video and PC data storage one time. GB on a dual-layer disc. BD-RE- HD video recording and PC data storage. BDs have a storage capacity of 25 GB on a single-layer disc, and 50 GB on a dual-layer disc.

Removable Storage Tape drive-Device used for data backup on a network server drive. Solid State-Does not have moving parts so it uses far less energy. (Thumb Drives, Flash Drives, SD cards, and USB are all Solid State devices) Eternal CD-RW-rewritable media that can be recorded, erased, and re-recorded. Hard Drive-a Permanent magnetic storage device that is installed inside the computer Hot Swappable- Allows peripherals Such as USB’s, to be changed while the system is running. Non-Hot Swappable devices- Does not allow peripherals such as Hard Drives, to be changed while the system is running
