Comparing and Ordering Whole Numbers Lesson 1-2 ACOS N1

You can use place value to compare and order whole numbers. Key Idea You can use place value to compare and order whole numbers.

What the Symbols Mean > is greater than < is less than = is equal to

How do you compare and order whole numbers? Which is greater: 28,748 or 28,527? Line up the digits by place value. 28,748 28,527 Look at the digits from left to right. Find the first place where the digits are different. The 2’s are the same, 8’s are the same, the 7 and 5 are different. Compare the values of the digits. The numbers compare the same way. 7 hundreds > 5 hundreds

Comparing More Than Two Numbers To compare more than two numbers, use the same steps: 28,746 28,746 is the greatest number. It has the ```````most hundreds. 28,562 Then compare the other two numbers. 28,526 28,562 is greater than 28,526. It has more tens. You can write the comparison as: 28,846 is greater than 28,562 and/or 28,526. 28,846 > 28,562 28,562 is less than 28,846. 28,562 < 28,846

Write the numbers in order from Least to Greatest 85,662 84,652 85,462 _____________________________ 198,598 189,908 189,998 198,958 ______________________________

Comparing Numbers 285 _____ 322 9,728 ____9,278 Compare the numbers. Write < or >. 285 _____ 322 9,728 ____9,278 45,883 _____45,309 51,070 _____ 50,712 561,040 ____ 560,244 8,324 _____8,314

????? If a number is greater than 900,000 and less than 901,000, what digit will be in the thousands place of the number? _______ Explain why you think so. ____________________________ ______________________________
