Select the type of assignment to be created

Types of Assignments Homework: These assignments are not timed and can be entered by the student as many times as necessary during the availability period. Completed exercises are saved and the student can pick up where he/she left off each time. Scores for these assignments appear in the Homework gradebook category. Tests: The instructor can set a time and attempt limit on these assignments. If a student is given more than one attempt to take the assignment, the student must start over from the beginning and complete the entire assignment with regenerated exercises each time. Scores for these assignments appear in the Tests gradebook category. Quizzes: Settings are the same as for tests, but the scores for these assignments appear in the Quizzes gradebook category. Offline Assignments: These are assignments that are completed and graded offline. The instructor can enter scores for these assignments into the online MathXL for School gradebook. The instructor determines the gradebook category for each offline assignment added to the gradebook.

Creating Quizzes or Tests The steps for creating a Quiz or Test are the same. The only difference between these types of assignments is that the results for students are stored in two different gradebook categories.

Creating Quizzes or Tests Give the assignment a unique name. Choose the gradebook category.

Select the chapter and section that contains the content Note: If the assignment contains content from more than one section, repeat the process for additional sections.

Selecting Exercises As with homework, exercises may be selected according to the similar item in the associated textbook, by Previewing & Adding, or by Previewing & Removing means an exercise like #43 in Chapter 3, Section 1

Adjust Point Values Once Exercises are Selected Note: If point values are not changed and left at the default value of 1, exercises will be equally weighted. In the gradebook, students will see both the points they earn (ex. 8/10) and the percentage (ex. 80%) for each assignment.

Quiz or Test Settings: Availability Options Set the Due Date and Time Select the chapters for which the assignment will display. Set the first available Date and Time

Quiz or Test Settings: Access Controls Password: If the test or quiz is to be taken in a proctored setting, an optional password can be included so that students cannot access it outside of class. Prerequisite: Set this to any previously created assignment if you wish students to complete that assignment (with optional % score) before having access to the quiz or test. Number of Attempts: The total number of times the student is allowed to take the quiz or test in its entirety. Students will get a newly generated version each time the quiz or test is accessed and must start over and complete all items each time.

Quiz or Test Settings: Access Controls An incomplete attempt may occur in some rare instances such as a student losing Internet access or accidentally hitting the browser back button while completing an assignment. For these instances, the teacher can determine in advance how access will be granted again for those students on that particular attempt of the quiz or test. The first option allows the student to re-enter the assignment without teacher intervention. The second option allows the student to re-enter the assignment, but only with instructor intervention. The teacher may further limit access to other assignments within MathXL for School by selecting Blocked Access.

Quiz or Test Settings: Presentation Options Time Limit: A time limit in minutes may be set for any quiz or test. The teacher also determines whether the time remaining is displayed while the student is taking the test or quiz. Question Display: Exercises may be displayed in the order in which they appear in the exercise list or they may be scrambled for each student. Learning Aids: Learning Aids may be made available to students during the quiz or test, or may be made available for students to use only while reviewing their submitted quiz or test.

Quiz or Test Settings: Review Options The teacher can choose whether students may review a quiz or test. The review options include: 1. Any time after submitting the assignment 2. Only immediately after submitting the assignment 3. Any time after the due date 4. Never In addition to review options, the teacher determines whether or not the student is able to print the assignment while reviewing.

Quiz or Test Settings: Scoring Options and Other Partial credit may be awarded when an exercise has multiple parts. The software will assign equal credit for each part. If this option is not checked, the student will not receive any credit if any part of a multi-part question is incorrect. Importing of the assignment by other teachers at your school may be allowed if desired. You may also import assignments from teachers at other schools if you know their log-in name. Once all assignment settings are in place, Save the assignment or Save & Assign it to make it available to students as of the start date. The assignment must be assigned before students will have access to it.

Use the Actions drop-down menu from the HW & Test Manager to unassign, edit, copy, delete, change settings for the class or for individual students, preview, list questions, or print the assignment. Note: Once an assignment has been entered by a student, the exercises in the assignment cannot be edited, but the settings can.
