A Walk Through the Bible ●The book of Judges relates the history of Israel after Joshua. 1.Judges covers about 450 years following the conquest of Canaan.

A Walk Through the Bible 2.There are four segments of approximately 500 years each in the nation’s history.

A Walk Through the Bible a.From the birth of Abram to the death of Joseph. b.From the death of Joseph to the Exodus.

A Walk Through the Bible c.From the Exodus to the monarchy. d.From the monarchy to the exile.

A Walk Through the Bible 3.It is a record of alternating defeat and victory. 4.The book was probably written by Samuel.

A Walk Through the Bible ●The first two chapters review the situation in Israel after the death of Joshua.

A Walk Through the Bible 1.Judah and Simeon joined together to subdue the Canaanites within their territory, but were only partially successful. 2.The Philistine cities of the coast, remained un-subdued.

A Walk Through the Bible 2.The Lord raises up Ehud from the tribe of Benjamin. 3.Ehud tricks King Eglon and assassinates him with a hidden dagger.

A Walk Through the Bible 4.Ehud returns to Israel, blew the trumpet of assembly, and led an army to attack the Moabites killing about 2,000 of their warriors. 5.There was peace in the land for 40 years under Ehud.

A Walk Through the Bible ●Deborah the Prophet – A leader of Faith 1.In the north of Canaan, Israel was under the control of Jabin of the city of Hazor.

A Walk Through the Bible 2.Life was unbearable for 20 years. 3.Deborah judged Israel in the hill country of Ephrim.

A Walk Through the Bible ●Gideon Battles the Medianites 1.40 years of peace was again broken by idolatry. 2.Seven years the Midianites from east of the Jordan harassed the Israelites to the point they had to hide in caves.

A Walk Through the Bible 3.In chapters 6-8 the angel of the Lord appears to Gideon. 4.Gideon pleads weakness like Moses did. God reassures him.

A Walk Through the Bible 5.Gideon prepares a meal for the visitor and the Lord touches it with his staff and it is consumed by fire. (remember Cain & Able?) 6.God gives Gideon a miraculous sign involving the fleece of a sheep.

A Walk Through the Bible 7.Gideon gathers an army of 32,000 men to fight the Midianites. 8.God tells Gideon he has too many men. Send some home.

A Walk Through the Bible 9.More are sent home, now he has an army of 300 men. 10.Shortly after midnight Gideon gave the word and trumpets were blown and torches flashed and the Midianites self-destructed.

A Walk Through the Bible ●Jephthah – The Son of A Harlot 1.In chapter 11 God laid hold of Jephthah. The son of a Harlot. 2.The Ammonites from the east launched an attack against Israel.

A Walk Through the Bible 3.The elders of Gilead, Jephthah’s brothers asked him to lead the Israelites against Ammon. 4.Jephthah makes a strange vow to offer in burnt sacrifice whatever came out of his door to greet him on his return.

A Walk Through the Bible 5.His daughter an only child met him at the door. He refused to break his vow. 6.Verse 39 says he did to her according to the vow he had made.

A Walk Through the Bible ●After the death of Jephthah, a series of three little known judges arose in various parts of Israel, judging for varying periods of seven to ten years.

A Walk Through the Bible ●Samson – A Child of Promise 1.Chapters focus on the life of Samson. 2.The angel of the Lord appears to the wife of Manoah of the tribe of Dan.

A Walk Through the Bible 3.She was told her barrenness would end, and she would bear a son who would be devoted to the Lord from his birth. 4.Manoah is a man of little faith until he sees the Angel of the Lord ascend before him in the smoke of his offering.

A Walk Through the Bible 5.Samson was born, like Isaac, a child of promise. A man of great strength. 6.His weakness was an attraction to the daughters of the Philistines.

A Walk Through the Bible 7.On the way to arrange a marriage, with his bare hands slew a lion that attempted to attack him. 8.Later when he came to claim his wife he noticed the carcass was inhabited by a swarm of bees, and was filled with honey.

A Walk Through the Bible 9.He poses a riddle to 30 Philistine companions, and promises each of them a new garment if they could solve it.

A Walk Through the Bible 10.The riddle was: “Out of the eater came something to eat. Out of the strong came something sweet”. Referring to the honey (14:10)

A Walk Through the Bible 11.Seven days they tried in vain to solve it. Finally they bribed his new wife for the answer. 12. To pay the debt Samson kills 30 men of Ashkelon and gave their garments to his friends.

A Walk Through the Bible 13.Samson goes to visit his wife and learns she has been given away. 14.He caught 300 foxes, tied them together in pairs by the tails with torches between and sets fire to the Philistine’s fields of grain.

A Walk Through the Bible 15. In revenge the Philistines burned Samson’s wife and father men of Judah convince Samson to let them deliver him to the Philistines bound in ropes.

A Walk Through the Bible ●The final incident of his life centered around a woman named Delilah. 1.The story of her attempt to discover the secret of his strength has been told around the world.

A Walk Through the Bible 2.Three times he gave her false clues and three times the Philistines came at him and were repulsed. 3.He finally tells her the truth, then while he slept she had a servant shave his head.

A Walk Through the Bible 4.When he awoke he did not know the Lord had departed from him. 5.The Philistines capture him, gouged out his eyes and put him in prison.

A Walk Through the Bible 6.After several months his hair began to grow. Samson was brought before the Philistine lords to make sport of him.

A Walk Through the Bible 7.Samson asked to be placed between two great pillars that supported the house. He prayed to the Lord and pushed the pillars apart. 8.The house collapsed and killed 3000 Philistines. Samson included.

A Walk Through the Bible ●It is interesting to note that the Israelites were under some sort of servitude for 111 years. ●The final story in the book of Judges is one of the most sordid accounts in scripture.

A Walk Through the Bible 1.A Levite’s bride/concubine had left him and returned home. 2.Wanting to repair the relationship the Levite traveled some distance to retrieve her.

A Walk Through the Bible 3.On the return trip, unable to find lodging in Gibeah, a Benjamite city. They decided to sleep in the street. 4.An old man begged them not to do that for reasons reminiscent of Sodom and Gomorrah.

A Walk Through the Bible 5.The old man took them home to lodge for the night. 6.The men of the town banged on the door demanding the male guest come out.

A Walk Through the Bible 7.The old man gave them his concubine who was raped all night until she died. 8.The man was so upset he cut her into 12 parts and sent them to the 12 tribes.

A Walk Through the Bible 9.The tribes were outraged and went to the Benjamites to find out who had done it. 10.The Benjamites were attacked and only 600 were left after the attack.

A Walk Through the Bible ●It’s interesting to note that the first king of Israel was from the tribe of Benjamin.

A Walk Through the Bible This concludes our review of the Book of Judges
