Demonstrating Water Pollution What kinds of things pollute the water?

Types of pollution – what are they? Biodegradable wastes Nutrients Thermal Sediment Chemical Radioactive Medicinal Microbiological

Basically – three groups Hydrocarbons Dissolved substances Solids Test for: TDS=Total Dissolved Solids pH= how much hydrogen is in the water

Fill in the chart below: TDS pH Observations Plain Water Water & Food Water & Dirt Water & All pollutants

Pollutant Removal How should these pollutants be removed? Filter Add bleach Add chemicals

All pollutants together Describe what you see at the following times: Initial observations 3 min. observations 5 min. observations Final TDS= ______________ Final pH= ______________

Removal of pollutants How would you remove the pollutants now? Should it be filtered? Should it have bleach added to it? Should it have other chemicals added to it? If you did this – would the resulting water be safe to drink? If the Assiniboine River looked like this… what could we do to it? What are other alternatives?
