NASA Software Productivity Consortium NASA Office of Safety and Mission Assurance Software Assurance Symposium September 5, 2002 Robert Ling Johnson Space Center Houston, Texas (281)

Purpose Provide an avenue for NASA software programs to utilize Software Productivity Consortium (SPC) processes, methods, tools and services that will significantly improve their ability to build high integrity, reliable, and safe software intensive systems

Objectives Gain access to industry perspectives and plans for software and systems engineering process technology Provide SPC resources (guidebooks, technical reports, case studies, and training videos) via the NASA Software Working Group to NASA software engineering personnel Participate in SPC workshops, conferences, and executive roundtables to stay abreast of current software engineering technology trends Incorporate knowledge gained into existing and future software process improvement activities at the NASA Centers

History SPC membership originally established for NASA under the Glenn Research Center in June 1996 via a Center Initiative NASA liaison position transferred to IV&V Facility in May 1997 NASA liaison position transferred to JSC in May 2002

SPC Overview Unique, nonprofit partnership of industry, government, and academia Develop processes, methods, tools, and supporting services to help their members and affiliates build high- quality, component-based systems, and continuously advance their systems and software engineering maturity Membership is open to all U.S. or Canadian-based companies, government agencies, and academic organizations –Currently stands at 95 members (e.g. - AT&T, Kodak, Unisys, Boeing, Draper Labs, FAA, Air Force, Navy, Army, Carnegie Mellon Univ, John Hopkins Univ, USC)

Benefits SPC membership will aid NASA programs with: –Integrating systems and software disciplines –Leveraging model-based and component-based development methods within an architectural framework –Complying with various software and system development standards, maturity models, and quality standards –Defining, collecting, analyzing, and applying measurements for management, process improvement, quality improvement, systems engineering, and software development activities –Understanding technology trends and the impact on NASA programs

Products/Services Project & Risk Management Integrated Systems and Software Engineering Process CMMI Higher-level software maturity Systems engineering maturity Establishing a Metrics Program Product Line Management and Engineering (Reuse Adoption) Compliance Framework Mapping Tool (Quagmap ®) Software estimation Consortium Requirements Engineering Test Automation Framework Defect Prevention Consortium Approach to Framework Engineering Samples

Technology Transfer Various products and services from the Consortium utilized by NASA programs –CMMI Transitioning –Software Estimation –Risk Management –Reuse-Driven Software Processes Guidebook –Product Line Management and Engineering –Product Line Definition Workshop –Reuse Economics Spreadsheet Model Tool and User Manual –Consortium Object-Oriented Software Engineering Using UML (COSUML) Guidebook –Object-Oriented Approach for Software Intensive Systems (OOASIS) Method –IV&V Return-On-Investment Research Study –Practical Software Measurement Guidebook –Practical Software Measurement Insight Workstation Tool

Events NASA personnel participated in the following activities with or at the SPC: 2002: –SPC Ninth Annual Member Forum 2001: –SPC Eighth Annual Executive Executive Roundtable –National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) and Software Productivity Consortium Process Improvement Workshop 1999: –SPC Product Line Definition Workshop (Goddard Space Flight Center, Information Systems Center) 1998: –SPC Sixth Annual Member Forum –Software Reuse Adoption Informational Meeting (Goddard Space Flight Center, Information Systems Center)

Account Registration SPC “For Members Only” web site is an on-line repository of guidebooks, technical reports, training materials, briefings, trip reports, and a host of other assets useful in system software development and process improvement programs NASA civil servants must register for an account to access the SPC “For Members Only” web site Non-civil servants can register as a guest to access the on-line Catalog of Products and Services
