Content Management Systems What is a Content Management System, or CMS?

Content Management Systems What is a Content Management System, or CMS? A computer application used to create, edit, manage, search, and publish various kinds of digital media and electronic text

Content Management Systems What is Content? In essence: any type or “unit“ of digital information It can be text, images, graphics, video, sound, documents, records etc.  anything in an electronic format

Content Management Systems What is Content Management? The management of content by combining rules, processes, workflows  A CMS is a tool that enables technical and non technical staff to create, manage and finally publish a variety of content, while being constrained by a set of rules that ensure coherent, validated electronic content.

Content Managment Systems Types of CMS: Asset management tools Document management systems Enterprise content management Web content management (example: ropa/site/browse.php) ropa/site/browse.php …

Content Management Systems Area of application for CMS in economy and Industry: Storing, controlling, versioning, and publishing industry- specific documentation: news articles, operators’ manuals, technical manuals, sales guides, and marketing brochures Management of work flows and the paperless office

Content Management Systems Area of application of the CMS for Matilda: CMS as connecting element beside personal contacts of the persons involved Storage of documents available for all members Communication E- learning

Content Management Systems Drupal = the software, the Matilda CMS is based on

Content Management Systems About Drupal Software, that allows an individual or a community of users to publish, manage, and organize a wide variety of content on a web side Drupal is one of the leading Web CMS software with tens of thousands of people and organizations using it

Content Management Systems Applications for Drupal: Community web portals Discussion sites Corporate web sites Intranet applications Personal web sites or blogs E- commerce applications Social Networking sites

Content Management Systems That is special about Drupal: Open source Easy to use for technical and non- technical staff Web- based: content is stored in a database, dynamically composed and presented to a user in response to the request sent via a web- browser

Content Management Systems Thank you for your attention! And now: Coffee and Tea break!

Hands on the website:

Questions on the previous day Good morning! Let’s start with questions on the previous day!

E- learning E- learning: Technology supported education/learning, medium of instruction is through computer technology “pedagogy empowered by digital technology” E- learning and blended learning Growing usage in education and training of employees

E- learning E- learning takes place mostly by using e- learning platforms (these are all CMS’!) or by using independent Web 2.0 tools like fora and blogs

E- learning To give you an idea, how e- learning looks like with a platform, let’s have a short look inside a blended learning course I am attending at the moment:

Blogs Blog Short form of “Weblog” (compiled of the words “web” for Internet and “log” for logbook) a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video

Blogs Blogs as tools for e- learning The teacher gives exercises, the results have to be presented at the student’s personal blog Blogs are usually part of e- learning platforms or free software is used for this purpose

Blogs Examples: Blog used as a diary: 9/i-hate-school/ Blog used as a jounal:

Blogs Start your own blog in five minutes:

Blogs

Blogs Please post a new entry to your blog: Write five minutes about your favourite (Austrian) dish Please save the draft, and then publish it. Afterwards have a look at your blog. Now we will connect each other via the Blog Roll

Forum Internet forum: or message board, is an online discussion site. From a technological standpoint, forums or boards are web applications managing user-generated content.

Forum Internet Fora and e- learning: Same function as blogs, but content is organized in postings concerning certain topics or exercises, it is not bound to the user like in blogs

Forum

RSS- Feeds What is an RSS- Feed? Abbreviation for Really Simple Syndification Family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works – blog or forum entries, news headlines etc. Keep readers up to date quickly from favoured websites

RSS- Feeds

RSS- Reader: Used to read RSS- feeds Can be included in Browsers, e- mail programmes or is used as a special programme Checks the user’s subscribed feeds regularly for new work, downloads updates and proviedes a user interface

RSS- Feeds Now we will subscribe to RSS- Feeds of the Matilda Forum. Please got to to get yourwww.google.com own feed reader.

RSS- Reader
