SHORT MESSAGE SERVICE(SMS) Seminar on SHORT MESSAGE SERVICE(SMS) by Sujisha.k

INTRODUCTION SMS appeared on the wireless scene in 1991 in Europe. The European standard for digital wireless, now known as the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), included short messaging services from the outset. In North America, SMS was made available initially on digital wireless networks built by early pioneers such as BellSouth Mobility, PrimeCo, and Nextel, among others. These digital wireless networks are based on GSM, code division multiple access (CDMA), and time division multiple access (TDMA) standards.

SMS(Short Message Service) Short Message Service is a mechanism of short messages over the mobile networks The message from the sending mobile is stored in a SMC which then forward it to the destination Short message can be no longer than 160 character An interesting feature of SMS is return reciepts SMS used signaling channel as opposed to dedicated channel SMS support national & international roaming

HOW DOES SMS WORK HLR MS SME S SMC GMSC SMC MSC BSS SSME SME VLR

TECHNICAL DETAILS GSM GATEWAY PROVIDERS Short Message Service –Point to Point(SMS-PP) was originally defined in GSM GSM defines the Short Message Service –Cell Broadcast(SMS_CB) GATEWAY PROVIDERS SMS gateway providers facilitate sms traffic b/w businesses and mobile subscribers. SMS gateway providers classified as aggregators and SS7providers

MESSAGE SIZE Short messages can be encoded using a variety of alphabets Depending on which alphabet used leads to maximum short message sizes of 160 7-bit,140 8-bit,70 16-bit characters INTERCONNECTIVITY WITH OTHER N/W Message service centers communicate with PLMN or PSTN via interwoking & GMSCs Subscriber originated messages are transported from handset to service center &may be destined for mobile users, subscribers on a fixed n/w

SMS SPOOFING It occur when a fraudester manipulates address information in order to impersonate a user . Detecting and blocking spoofed message can be implemented using intelligent routing function.

TYPES OF SMS FLASH SMS it appears directly on the main screen without user interaction 2. SILENT SMS It will not shown up on the display directly.

Network architecture

Subscriber Services SMS comprises two basic point-to-point services: Mobile-originated short message (MO–SM) Mobile-terminated short message (MT–SM)

DIFFERENCE B/W SMS & E-MAIL Text message in cellphones It needs cell phone 160 characters Not carry multimedia files E-MAIL Digital message in neworks It need internet connection,pc etc. 1000 characters It carry multimedia files

APPLICATIONS It is possible to send e-mail messages from a mobile phone to e-mail Provide information service like news , weather etc. Mobile chatting Downloading new ringtones Alphanumeric paging services

LIMITATIONS Vanilla in nature Limited by size Data rate and latency Store and forward nature of SMS

CONCLUSION………. SMS,because of its very nature has unique advantages that other non voice sevices do not have.it is a very convenient way of xchaging small bits of information b/wusers

THANK YOU
