Learning math in Jutarums preschool and primary school

Math Games – Obstacle Course The children measured the area, designed a obstacle course for a part of the schoolyard and made a model. City workers built it. The course provides exercise and helps practicing location subjects.

Math Games - Measurements The teachers hang different length ropes in the trees. Two teams race and fetch the ropes. When all ropes are found, the children arrange the ropes in a line. The the ropes are counted and the lines measured (with steps or otherwise). The children discuss methods and work together with the teachers help at solving the project. The team with the longer line wins.

Math Games Experimenting and sorting Experiment: Launching a spaceshuttle. The yongest children search for and sort materials from nature.

Math Games Numerical Understanding Bingo. With the help of the teacher but mostly each other the children discover which number fits each bear-card.

Math Games – Pairing - Counting The children stand inside a circle (arranged in a circle)carrying cards with 1-6 dots. Two children carry the same number of dots. One tosses a dice and the two children sharing the same number of dots will switch circles. Each tries to be first to reach the others circle. Younger children share a circle with an older child. The child counts the dots.

Math using vote in Jutarums Primary school 1/2 The children taste 4 kinds of vegetables. After the tasting they line up behind the vegetable they liked best. The teacher gives each of them one Kapla block. Each child replaces itself with the Kapla block.

Math using vote in Jutarums Primary school 2/2 The blocks form lines behind each type of vegetable and the outcome of the vote becomes more visual. Then the teacher gives the children a small picture of the veggie they voted for that they glue to a diagram. The children answer the teachers questions and compare number and heigh using the Kapla blocks. Finally they register findings in their books.
