ISAF Sailing Rules 2013 to 2016 Just in case this happens to you

The Basics Port / Starboard (Rule 10 - Opposite Tacks) Windward / Leeward (Rule 11 – Same Tack and overlapped) Ahead / Astern (Rule 12 – Same Tack but not overlapped) A boat that is Tacking or Gybing (Rule 13 – Maneuvering )

Tip on how to remember which Tack or Gybe you are on Sitting on the side of the boat or side rail with one foot under the toe strap and one foot over and looking directly at the sail If your right shoulder is facing towards the bow You are on Starboard You have right of way

Breaking one or more Part 2 Sailing Rules If you infringe a Part 2 Sailing Rule you shall: Sail promptly clear of the fleet Take a two turn penalty in the same direction The sequence of turns can start with a Tack or Gybe For boats that are slow to Tack such as Catamarans the two turn penalty can be replaced with a one turn penalty as defined in the sailing instructions

Touching a Mark that begins or ends a leg of the course A boat sail promptly clear of all other boats and take a one turn penalty in the same direction and shall include one Tack and one Gybe Rules 31 & 44

A Gybe Mark / Leeward Mark Establish your relationship to other boats before you hit the Zone (the Zone starts at 3 boat lengths) Imagine taking an aerial plan view photograph of your positions on the water when the ahead boat’s bow touches the Zone If a boat or boats are overlapped inside of you then you shall give them room to round the Mark
