Analog Clock An analog clock has two hands. The short hand is the hour hand. The long hand is the Minute hand.

Digital Clock There are no hands on a digital clock. You just read the time from left to right. The first two numbers are the hour. The second two numbers are the minutes. A colon separates the hour and minutes.

Which would you rather use? Analog Digital

Students learning to tell time need to use an analog clock or watch.

Let’s learn how to tell time! It takes 60 minutes for the long hand to go all the way around. It takes 12 hours for the short hand to go all the way around.

There are 60 minutes in each hour.

Clock 5’s The numbers 1 through 12 are spaced 5 minutes apart. So, there are 5 minutes between each number. Let’s count by 5’s until we get to 60 minutes, which equals 1 hour.

Why are there only 12 numbers on the clock if there are 24 hours in a day? The hour hand goes around the clock once for morning (a.m.) and around again in the afternoon and night. (p.m.)
