UPDATE ON PROGRESS WITH ISCO AND INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATION OF STATUS IN EMPLOYMENT Expert Group on International Economic and Social Classifications New York, May 2011

2 International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO) Group definitions (explanatory notes) have been available on ILO Website since July 2009 as ‘final’ draft Use by many countries to adapt national classifications led to identification of (small) errors and areas that required clarification –Updated ‘really final’ definitions are now available and reflect these concerns Introduction to ISCO covers many of the problems experienced in early implementation Above material (as well as correspondence tables) to be published as ISCO-08 Vol 1 in English, French, Spanish as soon as possible  Structure available in all EU languages on request Future and ongoing work Index of occupational titles to be released as Volume 2 Translations into other languages: Russian? Arabic? Resolution of issues on Eurostat hosted Web forum Dev Technical assistance and advice to countries

Status in Employment International Classification of Status in Employment (ICSE-93) Adopted at the Fifteenth ICLS in 1993 Allows identification of: –Employees (paid employment jobs) –Self-employed (income depends solely on profits) Employers Own-account workers Members of producers’ cooperatives Contributing family workers A critical variable to understand structure and functioning of labour market 3

ICSE-93 – Optional categories, issues and problems Subsistence workers Owner managers of incorporated enterprises Casual and seasonal workers and other forms of precarious employment Outworkers Home-based workers Contractors Members of producers cooperatives are rare 4
