A civilization and an empire

Government Ancient Greece had four types of government. They were Oligarchy, Tyranny, Monarchy, and Democracy. In addition, Alexander the Great had a government which represented terror and kindness.

Religion The people of Ancient Greece believed in the Greek gods. The people also had a polytheistic religion, which means that they believed in multiple gods and the home of the gods was Mount Olympus.

Social Structure Men were considered citizens, but women were not. Slaves were the lowest in the social structure pyramid. Women could own slaves but women could only run the house. Women also could not go to assembly to vote. Gods were at the very top of the social structure as you can see below.

The Arts Ancient Greece had a great sense of theater. They did a great job at performing drama. They also had organization of rows in a theatre called an amphitheatre. They were also great at painting pottery. They made beautiful jars to store valuable items. They also had the statue of Athena in Athens guarding the Pantheon. They also played instruments like the lyre.

Written Language In Athens, boys were expected to learn how to read and write. They wrote on tablets. They learned how to write poetry. Before they were 14, they had physical training because Ancient Greece believed in a healthy body and a healthy mind made a good citizen. Only the wealthy boys went to school when they were 14. They learned the alphabet shown below. Only some girls learned to read and write.

Technology Merchants built ships to sail across the Mediterranean Sea to explore other places, build colonies, and trade. The Ancient Greeks also used chariots in the Olympics and in war. The Greek amphitheaters were designed to let people in the audience hear from every direction as well. These are some ways that the Ancient Greeks developed technology.

Stable Food Supply Ancient Greece had a stable food supply because the Greek people traded with other countries. They mostly traded for food. They sold the food at the agora which is a marketplace in Athens. They sold food like lettuce and onions.

Doesn’t Start from Scratch Fighting within Ancient Greece lead to the rise of Alexander the Great and the Persian Empire. This empire formed following the Peloponnesian war. This war was between Athens and Sparta. As these two city-states fought one another, Macedonia grew stronger and ultimately its future leader, Alexander, came to lead the empire.

Strong Leader and Strong Army Ancient Greece had a strong leader in Alexander the Great. He lead a strong army that extended Macedonia to Asia Minor. The army defeated many empires and civilizations like Asia Minor and Egypt.

Trade Ancient Greeks traded food, money, services, ideas, and more in Athens and Sparta. The main trading hub in Athens was the Agora. During the Alexander Empire, Greek culture that Alexander had learned from Aristotle spread as people traded. He hoped that customs would blend in with the other cultures that he conquered.

Organization Ancient Greece had organization because they had democracy. This was a form of law that states that the power of government should be held by the people. Other systems of laws like oligarchy, monarchy, and tyranny came later.

A Main Religion with Freedom of Religion Ancient Greece had a main religion which worshipped Greek Gods. This religion was taught through myths. Other religions were also practiced under Alexander the Great in order to inspire loyalty among his followers. Alexander the Great honored Persian gods as well as Greek gods because he wanted to include other religions as he conquered their followers. He also wanted people to believe that he was the son of Zeus, the most powerful Greek God.

Decline/Fall When Alexander the Great died at age 33, Ancient Greece declined and ultimately fell apart. It did not have a strong single leader to guide it, and the empire broke into three separate kingdoms. People left the cities Alexander had built and those cities fell into ruin.
