Section 2 Flowers

Black Eyed Susan Have coarse, hairy leaves with golden yellow heads and brownish black centers. Grow about 2 to 3 feet tall. Bloom from summer to fall. Like full sun or light shade and can tolerate hot, dry summers. Best used as cut flowers. Typically grown in beds, backgrounds, and borders.

Chrysanthemum Native to the Orient, where it is a symbol of Japanese royal imperial house. Leaves are thick Different colors are available; yellow, orange, red, white. The cultivar “ Clara Curtis ” the flowers are pink color with yellow center. Grow in mounds 1 to 3 feet tall and bloom in late summer to frost. Like full sun in a well- drained, moist soil. Require ample fertilizer and water. Used in border or cut flowers.

Daylily Daylily forms large clumps of long linear leaves and tall erect flowers. Range in height from 3-4 feet tall and are edible. Come in any color of the rainbow. “ Hemerocallis ” is Greek, meaning “ beautiful for a day, ” since the flowers only last a day in bloom. Early summer to frost is the time or bloom. Used in borders and rock gardens.

Gladiolus Perennial with sword- shaped, erect leaves and showy floral spikes Bloom in the summer and should be cut back after blooming to ensure growth in the next season. Used as cut flowers and like full sun in moist, well-drained soil. Do not plant near trees or shrubs

Hollyhock Colors are yellow, pink, lavender and red. Grow in a spike form Long blooming period from June to late August Look great as a background plant against a wall or fence. Grows best in full sun and well-drained areas. May need to be staked.

Petunia Most common annual bedding plant. Colors vary from white to dark purple, some can also be striped. Flowers have a fringed edge. Shade to full sun and well-drained soils Deadheading is required for good blooming. Best used in beds or flower boxes.

Begonia This is a Hybrid Tuberous Begonia native to Brazil. Used as a bedding plant in shady areas, hanging baskets, or window boxes. Colors vary from red to orange. Requires a well-drained soil Leaves are wide and glossy. Tuberous begonia can be propagated via leaf cuttings.

Geranium A classic annual that will bloom all summer long. Grown in flower beds, borders or containers. They like full sun with moist, well-drained soil. Strong odor when leaves are rubbed or crushed.(chocolate, lime)

Impatients Tender annual plants for shady areas. Grow best in moist soil around trees or patio planters. Colors are white, pink, lavender, red Bloom from early summer to frost. Stem cuttings can be easily taken to propagate.

Pansy Depending on climate, Pansies will bloom in the fall, spring or early summer. Most varieties can survive the winter. Flowers are thin with delicately overlapping petals, and have usually two to three colors. Cool-season plants but prefer sun to partial shade with cool, moist, well drained soil. Also need to be well- watered and deadheaded for continued bloom.
