What’s the article going to be about? Look at the title and the photos. Then, read the first two sentences in the first paragraph. Which information will be in the article? A.The prices of healthy breakfast B.The nutrition contents C.The place to get healthy breakfast Do you think it is an interesting article to read? Breakfast is important both for weight control and for brain development. That’s why breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day

So, What is Skimming? To read quickly to find general information of the text. Decision: continue reading or find another source?

When skimming, we … Images (pictures, photos, graphs)

How?

Scanning

What is this? 1.Whose phone number is ? 2.What’s the phone number of Theresa? 3.Who lives at 30 Chapman Wey? You just scanned for specific details in a phone book

Classified Ads We also scan for details when we look for a specific piece of information in a classified ad. Where can you find this? Which section do you read to find job opening?

So, what is scanning? Scanning is a reading strategy used when we want to find SPECIFIC INFORMATION quickly. In Scanning, we have a question in our mind and we read a text (passage) only to find the answer (ignoring unrelated information)

Scanning: How? Analyze the ORGANIZATION of the content before scanning (e.g. alphabetically, numbers, shapes, causes-effects, categories, procedures) Scan for a SPECIFIC word, phrase, name, date or place name When you find the sentence that has the information you seek, READ quickly the text around it just to make sure.
