The Challenges Legislative change being driven by –Need to improve energy efficiency –Reduce carbon emissions –Security of supply Grid electricity is currently carbon intensive –High gas and oil content But…. –Gas prices have risen by 40% in the last 12 months –The UK is now a net importer of gas –Security of supply issues mean we must become self sufficient in energy provision Renewables Nuclear?

This means that… Low carbon Sustainable Electricity WILL be the fuel of the future

Solutions for today Electric heating appliances 100% efficient at the point of use –Dependent on improvements in the “efficiency” of generation Carbon emissions reduced by using systems that: –Have close tolerance, user adjustable controls –Integrated or centrally programmed time controls

Panel Heaters Arguably the most controllable of ANY type of heating appliance Individual room time and temperature controls –Not possible with a central “boiler” system Electronic thermostatic controls –Accuracy to <1°C Individual heater or central timer controls Lowest carbon emissions in SAP

DuoHeat Radiators Hybrid off peak / direct acting system Optimises use of energy to: –Improve thermal comfort –Provide better controllability –Reduce carbon emissions Provides optimum mix of controllability and low running costs –70% of energy still from off peak electric Energy efficiency benefits recognised by SAP

Solutions for the future Heat pumps Use energy from the environment to meet up to 75% of the heating requirement –Sourced from the ground or air –Free and inexhaustible Powered by electricity “Efficiency” of up to 400% –Gas boiler circa 85% Able to provide 100% of heating and hot water needs Usually connected to a wet heating system –Underfloor heating or radiators

Solutions for the future Hybrid renewable / electric heating systems Domestic Hot Water heat pump Significantly reduces carbon emissions from water heating –Potentially by up to 50% Will allow conventional electric space heating appliances to specified –Panels –DuoHeat radiators

Summary Electric heating has and will continue to have a key role to play in the market Renewables and hybrid systems of renewables combined with conventional electric heating appliances will be the way of the future Likelihood of consolidation between the traditional “boiler” and electric heating market sectors Installers will have to develop their skill sets to meet the needs of tomorrows building services market
