ARHU: LIFE OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

Life outside the classroom…  Study Abroad:  ARHU supports and encourages students in all majors to take advantage of study abroad opportunities. You can go in the fall, spring, winter, summer, or academic year.  Studying abroad can often count as part of your Global Engagement Requirement!  Scholarships and Financial Aid are available, so don’t let worries about the cost deter you. Sometimes a semester abroad is even cheaper than a semester in College Park!  Options include: MD-in programs, USAC residency programs, Flagship programs in Arabic and Persian, exchange programs (which can be tuition-free), and outside programs  There is a HUGE Study Abroad Fair every fall! Check it out!  So, just go away…and study abroad!

Life outside the classroom…  Internships:  ARHU supports its majors in getting internships as soon as your second semester of college!  You can earn up to 12 internship credits toward your graduation requirements.  Credit is offered through your departmental major course, and ARHU 286/386/486.  In Spring, 2011, 25% of graduating seniors were offered full time jobs with their spring internship site (this does not include students with other job offers).  Places ARHU students have interned over the past year: -Discovery Network-Smithsonian Folk Life Festival -Senate Banking Committee-Senator John Kerry’s Office -Bloomingdale’s Chevy Chase-National Geographic -Practical Horseman Magazine-Travel Channel -Sports Junkies radio show-NBC, FOX, and BET television stations -Sirius XM Radio-American History Museum

Life outside the classroom…  Scholarships/Honor Societies:  ARHU provides a number of scholarships to our students based on both merit (classroom performance) and financial need; They are awarded every spring for the following academic year.  UMD has a National Scholarship Office that provides a number of national and international scholarship and fellowship opportunities.  These are only a few valuable academic Honor Societies to start thinking about* -PLAN AHEAD!!: -Phi Beta Kappa -Golden Key Honor Society -Primannum Honor Society -Alpha Lambda Delta (freshmen) -Phi Eta Sigma (freshmen)-Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) -Black Honors Caucus-Mortar Board -Lambda Pi Eta (COMM majors)-Phi Alpha Theta (HIST majors) -Sigma Tau Delta (ENGL majors)-Sigma Delta Pi (SPAN majors) -Phi Sigma Iota (FREN/ITAL majors)-Eta Beta Rho (HEBR students) *A full list of opportunities is available online in the Undergraduate Catalog.  Tips: Get to know your faculty early so they can support you with strong letters of recommendation. Full time faculty members are usually your best source for letters of recommendation! Plan to put some quality time and attention into preparing scholarship and honor society applications-they are competitive!

Life outside the classroom…  Career Center:  Careers4Terps- a comprehensive listing of internships and part- and full- time job opportunities are listed and regularly updated—sign up throughout the Career Center website.  There is a HUGE internship and job fair every fall! This is especially valuable for students planning to attend graduate school.  Here are some of the opportunities available*: Ronald McNair Baccalaureate Program: Intended for Ph.D.-bound high-achieving students from underrepresented backgrounds (2 year program; includes summer stipend and room and board). Maryland Summer Scholars Program: Provides funding support for qualified juniors and seniors doing research or artistic projects. Undergraduate Research Day: Held every April, UG Research Day allows students to present their work to a University- and community-wide audience. Numerous ARHU departments offer research/presentation opportunities to students. Students work with faculty and/or graduate student mentors and then can present their research to a departmental- and college-wide audience. *Additional opportunities can be found on the Maryland Center for Undergraduate Research website.
